I would be a good tutor because I'm passionate about education and have years of experience tutoring. I am good at picking up on individual needs and communication patterns to explain things to students in a way that they can clearly understand, practice, and retain. I realize that when it comes to education, time is of the essence and while some pupils may need an extended amount of time covering certain areas to master them, the faster they can learn what needs to be done the faster they can advance and the more they can get out of their educational experience. Because of this I place great importance on meeting with my students when scheduled and getting the most out of our time together. I take pride in doing a job well therefor my students success is my success.I worked as a teachers aid for k-3rd grade while I was in middle school and high school. I also spent one year tutoring Junior level English while I was a Senior in high school.

I have thrty-five years of experience teaching high school students. For twenty-five years I taught English and served as a school librarian. I devoted ten years to teaching independent studies, which requires one-on-one instruction in all subject areas. As an independent studies teacher I had to motivate students to complete their weekly asignments. I often had to tutor them and provide indiviual instruction since they weren't in a regular classroom situation.I taught independent studies 9-12 for ten years High school English teacher 25 years

I have experience working with kids ages 4-18 which I believe qualifies me for a tutoring position in a subject I'm very knowledgable in. I know what to expect, how to interact and communicate with them. Probably the greatest qualities that a tutor can possess is the ability to empathize with a students learning needs. No matter how difficult a student is to teach, all tutors need to have the ability to communicate the love and passion that they themselves have for learning. Tutors must be understanding and affirming, humble, patient and trustworthy. Tutors need not be highly intelligent or be intellectual achievers, but they must know what it feels like to be left behind or to not understand a concept and I do so I would be able to help them in any way possible. Even when a student is doing well, a tutor must desire more and work even harder to bring out the very best - not only from their students but also from themselves and I believe I can do this. Preparation is key, a tutor must know what you are going to teach before you teach it and not rely on stock knowledge or what you've already taught in the past so for this I would read and perhaps do the lesson myself to make sure I know and understand how to teach it in a way the student could understand. Nothing speaks louder, and builds more trust and confidence in your students than when you are reliable. To me, reliability isn't just being punctual, its conforming what you say to what you do. I wouldn't fake a caring attitude, or make promises that I don't intend to keep. I know people have expectations, and when I are able to confirm what I say, either verbally or non-verbally, I become reliable to them. This has always been a way I live by so transfering it to a tutoring job shouldn't be an issue.

What drives me to apply with Grade Potential is my passion for helping and serving others. I am driven by my convictions, and my highest conviction is to make a difference in other's lives. You can count on me to be a reliable tutor not only because this is job means more to me than making money, but also because I have a proven track record of following through. My last job, as a Part-Time Field Staff for Campus Crusade for Christ at UCSB, primarily involved mentoring student leaders and leading Bible Studies. My schedule the entire year was self-set and maintained, much like this job, and it further developed my reliability and commitment to a task. For a job that required only 30 hours a week, I worked most weeks 40 hours or more. This is because I was passionate about helping students and being available to them.You can count on me to know my stuff, because I'm passionate about learning and about teaching. I want to help others discover their full potential, and I will work as hard as I can to help someone learn material. The courses that I said I was confident in, I chose because I am still passionate about them being a year out of school. Reading and writing has always been my passion, and I love to pass that on to others.

"I know my stuff." I am creative, patient, and persistent in finding a way/example to have the student understand the point in question. I'll do what ever it takes to get through. I am usually pretty good at telling when the student does and does not understand the main points. I also have a good sense of humor to keep the student at ease.

Whenever my father would try to tutor me, he would explain things in a complicated manner and if I didn't understand what he was saying immediately, he'd lose his temper. I've learned from that and I understand that when explaining things to people I have to have perspective. I have to take the other person in mind and try to explain things in a broader and more general way so that they may understand what it is that I'm trying to get across. Not only that, but I don't judge anyone; I'm very patient, and I take my time in explaining things. My main philosophy behind teaching is to have perspective and understand the frustrations of the other person. As far as being reliable in keeping appointments and being committed, I am a punctual person and over the years I've learned to become a committed person through different practices and skills that I've acquired. For example, I've been playing the piano for over a decade now; I've learned to become committed to what I do through music, and other extra curricular activities such as cross country and taekwondo.

When I was a student, I was a great student, but ever since my first day tutoring I have been a passionate teacher. If one of my students is struggling with course material or writing, I think outside of the box and try new strategies until I hit on one that is effective for that individual. I love working with students to improve their skills, further their academic goals, and get them excited about learning. Tutoring isn't something to pass the time for me; it's what I care about and what I'm good at. I try to create a learning environment that is both supportive and challenging, so students know that they can take risks and push themselves to succeed without being afraid of "looking stupid." Age or grade isn't important to me; I work with anyone from Kindergarten to college, because what I love is helping students to learn and succeed academically. Students and parents would not have to worry about me being on time. I am compulsively early, and since I started tutoring I have never missed a single class or appointment. As a new SLO resident I have completely open availability, and as for transportation I have a reliable car and an excellent sense of direction. I am ready and excited to start tutoring here in SLO -- I'm just waiting for an opportunity.
