Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

There are many reasons why I would be able to teach my students the material they need to learn. One reason is because the subjects I agree to tutor are only the ones I feel passionate about. It would be unfair to the student if I did not enjoy the material I was teaching. Also, I have tutored for a few years now and I know what works and what doesn't work. I have learned to adapt to different learning styles as well as being able to recognize common struggles in the various subjects. Finally, being an engineer major with a math minor I'm well aware of how important these subjects are not only in my career choice, but in others as well.Reliability is one of the most important characteristics of not only a tutor, but an employee in any job field. I'm a very punctual person and I rely on my own means of transportation in order to get around in a timely manner. Also, in my opinion, appointments are like promises, and to I try not to break my promises to anyone. Since I have done tutoring before, I'm well aware that time is important, especially in classes where things build on one another. I would not let my students fall behind, that goes against my own personal policy.

In high school, I graduated as my class Valedictorian, which I hold as one of my proudest achievements. This is why I am very confident about the fact that I know my stuff. I was very well versed in all the basic subjects in high school, and now I am a 2nd year at UCSB with an even greater knowledge of Calculus and General Chemistry. I also once taught my entire Pre-Calculus class in high school how to draw and complete matrices, which is no easy topic. During each of the award ceremonies in high school, I always won one of the Mathematics awards. This is because I was very successful in all of my math classes and decided to tutor my fellow classmates to succeed in the class as well. On top of these reasons, I also consider myself a very punctual and organized individual. I was the ASB President of my high school because I had the qualities necessary to manage my own responsibilities along with the tasks that needed to be completed for ASB. I have never been late to work once, and completed all my tasks as ASB President. This is why you can rely on me to fulfill the commitments I make to you.

Not only do I have experience working with kids as a nanny, but for several summers I was a camp counselor at a sleep away camp. It was my job to not only ensure the kids were safe and happy at all times, but I had to teach several skills to the campers. I remember one specific time I was teaching a child how to turn safely on a dirt bike, a skill that can only be mastered when you can maintain balance on the dirt bike. One kid in particular was turning with ease, but he kept sticking out one of his feet around the turn to keep his balance. After watching him do this a couple times, I called him aside and showed him the proper way to sit and hold yourself on the bike when going around a turn. I explained that finding your core balance and slowing down slightly to not lose one's momentum will allow you to not have to take your foot off the bike at all, which is actually more dangerous. As soon as he got back on the bike, I watched him go around the turn perfectly without taking either foot off of the bike! I was amazed at how quickly he learned and as soon as he came around the track I congratulated him and told him how great he did. Any individual can "know their stuff" as you say, but not everyone can communicate that information well, be patient and engaged with the child or student. I feel that those qualities are what make an excelling and comfortable learning environment for both the tutor and the student, and I have those qualities.

I have been a life-long reader and lover of knowledge and I feel that tutoring would be an excellent way to help children and young adults discover what a valuable part of the human experience reading and writing are. As a young person myself (27) I will be easy to relate to and have a patient and warm demeanor which is important when students are nervous or insecure about their abilities. My reliability should be seen in my resume, I have a long work history and strong work ethic.

I'm a patient, caring, and understanding individual who enjoys working with children. I like to explain subjects from different viewpoints until the child can connect with one. I understand that everyone learns differently. Some learn through visual examples, while others learn from listening. In addition to the mode of learning, each child has his or her own pace of learning. Some students need things repeated several times and other just need to be told once. I have now almost completed the Honors Program at Santa Barbara City College and have expanded to taking courses at UCSB this semester. I know how to study well and how to earn a good grade. I have extensive experience as both a tutor and a classroom elementary school teacher. In the past I worked as a tutor specializing in students K-6. In addition to my tutoring experience, I have a multiple subject CLAD teaching credential from San Diego State University with an additional subject matter authorization in English. After getting my credential, I worked as a substitute teacher in elementary schools and middle schools in San Diego and Sacramento. I also taught for an extended period of time in 1st grade, 4th grade, and kindergarten. In all of my teaching placements I worked extensively with English Language Learners.
