    About Thomasville

The unique and quirky city of Thomasville is located in western-central North Carolina. With beautiful landscapes and happy, friendly residents, Thomasville is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. Great local schools, clean, safe streets, and a thriving local economy are all great benefits to living in Thomasville. With a rich history and a lot to offer, whether you are a resident or just passing through, Thomasville is a special place to be.

With a long history in the railroad industry, Thomasville boasts the oldest railroad station depot in the entire state of North Carolina. The North Carolina Railroad arrived to Thomasville in the middle of the 1800s, and the population experienced a sort of "boom" as a result. With better access to transportation, the economy benefitted greatly, and more families arrived here to set up their homes. The furniture industry was prominent here in Thomasville, and the railroad served as an excellent way to ship goods and materials to and from Thomasville.

One of the most famous local landmarks here in Thomasville is what has become known as "The Big Chair". Just to give some background on why such a large chair would be a prominent landmark in Thomasville, it's important to look back into the city's history. Thomasville was huge in the furniture construction industry, and as a result, the city felt it was important to commemorate one of their more famous pieces — the Duncan Phyfe armchair, which was a popular model that was built at the local Thomasville Chair Company. This replica model is, of course, much larger than the original, and stretches over thirty feet into the North Carolina sky. Because of this huge chair monument, Thomasville is sometimes referred to as "Chair City".

Other than the furniture industry, Thomasville has a long history in the textile industry. With several prominent cotton factories during the middle to late 1800s, the Jewel Cotton Mill and Amazon Cotton Mill provided many local jobs and also helped to stimulate the local economy here in Thomasville, giving balance to the furniture industry that seemed to dominate the city.

The Thomasville City Public School District serves the city of Thomasville with several high quality public schools. Besides these public schools, there are also a number of local private schools and charter schools for local students and their families to choose from. For any students living in Thomasville, local Thomasville tutors are available to provide extra help in any difficult subjects. These local tutors can help students build better study skills and work toward reaching each individual student's educational goals.
