    About Yadkinville

West of Greensboro and about 75 miles from Charlotte, Yadkinville, North Carolina is the seat of Yadkin County. Tiny Yadkinville (population under 3,000) is in the Piedmont Triad, the region around the area’s three most populated cities, Greensboro, Winston-Salem and High Point. The city’s name derives from the Native American word yattken, meaning “place of big trees.” Cherokee and Catawba tribes occupied the land for several hundred years before the first European settlers began trickling into North Carolina in the early 1700’s. One of the first settlers in Yadkin County was Morgan Bryan who came to America from Denmark. He originally settled in Pennsylvania before bringing his family to Virginia where he set up a trading post. Eventually, at the age of 78 he and his sons bought large tracts of land in Yadkin County where they again took up trade with the neighboring tribes. Significant development in Yadkin County didn’t occur until the middle of the 1800’s when the threat from Cherokee and Catawba warriors had ended. Farmers soon found that the North Carolina soil was perfect for tobacco. In recent years, however, with the decline in tobacco use in the United States, local farmers have turned to other more popular crops such as grapes. The first winery in Yadkin County opened in 2000 and now the area has 14 wineries producing award winning vintages such as Chardonnay and Merlot. Today, Yadkinville’s economy is a mixture of agriculture and manufacturing with companies such as Unifi, Lydall and Phillips-Van Heusen among the area’s largest employers.

A Yadkinville tutor will keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can take time away from the books to enjoy the many things to do in Yadkinville and the surrounding area. Yadkin Memorial Park at Lake Hampton offers a variety of recreational opportunities to Yadkinville residents. The 148-acre lake is excellent for boating, fishing and kayaking. The park has a walking trail and playground. Other amenities include two fishing piers, a boat ramp and picnic tables. The lake is also a reservoir providing fresh water to the Yadkinville area.

Residents and tourists alike will benefit from the Yadkin Cultural Arts Center located on East Main Street in Yadkinville. The center features the 193-seat Willingham Theatre which offers live music, drama, dance and film. The theatre recently staged performances of the play It’s a Wonderful Life and Handel’s Messiah performed by the Yadkin Community Chorus. The center showcases local artists in its glass towered art gallery which offers new exhibits twice a month. The center also holds art related classes and a summer arts camp for kids.

Just north of Yadkinville, Pilot Mountain State Park is a year-round recreational area with activities such as hiking, camping, rock climbing and fishing. Two miles of Canoeing is available on the Yadkin River which winds its way through the park. Nearly 50 camping sites cater to families looking to have a fun outdoor experience. Campsites include picnic tables, grills and tent pads. The focus of the park is Pilot Mountain rising more than 2,000 feet with an extensive network of hiking trails around and up the mountain. Rock climbing and rappelling are allowed on sections of the mountain’s steep cliffs.
