    About Snellville

Lured by fertile soil, rich timber and abundant streams and creeks, Native Americans began to come to the area around Snellville as early as the seventeenth century. Later known as Creeks by European colonists because they tended to settle their villages near waterways, the Native Americans outnumbered colonists and black slaves in Georgia until the late eighteenth century. In the early 1800’s Americans began to settle in the area with the land lottery of 1820. It wasn’t until later in the century, however, that an official settlement grew up in the area, thanks to English entrepreneurs Thomas Snell and James and Charles Sawyer. The three established a lucrative trading post selling goods to travelers on their way to Atlanta, approximately 20 miles to the southwest. Snellville eventually received its charter from the state of Georgia in 1923. It is currently one of the fastest growing cities in the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Snellville presents a slew of community activities each year. In May, the city hosts Snellville Days, a two-day festival in T.W. Briscoe Park, with live entertainment, vendors and a kid’s area with petting zoo and craft projects. Later in May the beach comes to Snellville as the Towne Green fills with sand for a Beach Blast and an afternoon of beach music, food and fun for all ages. In the dog days of summer the Towne Green again comes alive with Live on the Lawn, a series of outdoor concerts in June, July and August.

On the Fourth-of-July the town holds its own Independence Day celebration with traditional fireworks display. For foodies, the annual Taste of Snellville is a premier outdoor food festival complimented by live music. A Snellville tutor will get you caught up on your studies so you can enjoy the best of the city’s amenities. Later in the year, hayrides and scarecrows highlight the Snellville Fall Festival as cooler weather prevails. Finally, the city hosts a Christmas Tree Lighting November 25 on the Towne Green as Santa Claus makes an appearance to get photos with kids and adults alike.

One of the best things to do in Snellville as voted on Yelp.com is a visit to Masterpiece Mixers, an art studio and picnic area rolled into one. Students receive step by step instruction in creating an original artwork while having fun with friends and enjoying food and beverages. Kids and adults will enjoy the experience. Snellville also benefits from its proximity to downtown Atlanta and Stone Mountain. Atlanta is bustling with restaurants, shops, cultural events and recreational activities. For art and history lovers the city features the Atlanta History Center and High Museum of Art which houses artwork from around the world in its permanent collections. For naturists, Atlanta features a zoo, aquarium and botanical garden. Visitors might also want to take a trip to Stone Mountain Park, 3,200 acres of natural beauty with a wide variety of family fun activities inside the park, including Summit Skyride, transporting guests 825 feet to the top of the mountain.
