    About North Druid Hills

North Druid Hills, or Briarcliff, is an unincorporated suburb of Atlanta just minutes from the downtown area. Mostly a residential area, North Druid Hills gets top marks in quality of public schools, family life and diversity from the real estate website Niche.com. It is just north of its sister city Druid Hills and right on the edge of Emory University. Dr. Chapmon Powell (1798-1870) was one of the first settlers in the area. Powell established one of Georgia’s first medical facilities at his “Medicine House,” a log cabin, where he served the Cherokee Indians whom he had befriended. The cabin has since been moved to the historic Plantation Complex at Stone Mountain Park. Powell’s gristmill was eventually converted into the area’s first hydroelectric plant. During the Civil War, Powell’s son Oliver had his house confiscated by the Union Army and used as General Sherman’s headquarters during the siege of Atlanta. A city tutor from North Druid Hills will fill you in on the Civil War history in the area.

Recently, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta has announced plans to build a massive new hospital complex in the North Druid Hills area. The new facility would cost between $1 billion and $1.3 billion, making it the most expensive medical campus in Georgia. The project will complement the Center for Advanced Pediatrics and Emory Healthcare sports and medicine complex. The new center, run by the non-profit CHA, will be expanding care to more children. A spokesman for CHA said, “This furthers our mission to provide access to the best possible care for generations to come and strengthens our commitment to patients, families, physicians and community members.”

Emory University, one of the top private research institutions in the United States, is on the southern edge of North Druid Hills in the planned community of Druid Hills. Emory is best known for its liberal arts colleges, graduate and professional schools. It is also home to Emory Healthcare, the largest and most comprehensive health system in Georgia. With a total number of 14,000 students equally divided between undergraduate and graduate students, Emory includes Oxford College, Emory College of Arts and Sciences, Goizueta Business School and the Neil Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing. Originally founded by the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1836, the university grew by leaps and bounds in the early twentieth century with money from Asa Candler, the founder of Coca-Cola, whose money spearheaded the building of the school’s current campus.

Since North Druid Hills is minutes from downtown Atlanta it is within easy reach of a wealth of activities in the big city. A Grade Potential Tutor will get you caught up on your studies so you can enjoy what there is to do in Atlanta. One such attraction is the Atlanta Botanical Garden, a 30-acre habitat for a variety of flora right in the center of the busy city. The garden features several permanent and temporary exhibits. The Kendeda Canopy Walk is a 600-foot long skywalk over the top of the Storza Woods. The garden also displays the stunningly beautiful glass art of Dale Chihuly in an exhibit called “Chihuly in the Garden.”
