Of course long before European settlers arrived to this part of the United States, the area that is now part of Newark was inhabited by local tribes of Native Americans and indigenous peoples. The primary tribe that called this land home was the Hopewell tribe, and traces of their homes and structures can still be found in certain parts of Newark to this day. The Hopewell tribe is known for creating the largest network of homes created within mounds and tunnels in this area of Ohio. There are various landmarks throughout Newark that are dedicated to preserving the rich history of the Hopewell tribe.

Newark is known for an old factory that used to be located here, the Heisey Glass Company factory. Operating for over six decades, this glass factory produced much of this region’s glass, and today, many tourists visit the National Heisey Glass Company Museum. Many of the old glass relics that were once mass produced here are now collectors items, and many antique enthusiasts come to Newark to see these old pieces of glass.

A local landmark that brings many gawkers every day is the “big picnic basket”, aka the Longaberger building. Fittingly, this building that has been designed in the shape of a large picnic basket, is home to a major basket manufacturing company. Besides this basked-making company, Newark is also home to several other large manufacturing companies, including Kaiser Aluminum, Boeing, Harry and David, and many more. Newark is also home to a large local shopping center, the Indian Mound Mall, which was named after the local Hopewell tribe’s ancient homes here. The Indian Mound Mall provides much of the local shopping for all Newark residents, and even some of the surrounding towns, as it boasts many major big name retailers.

Served by the Newark City School District, Newark’s students have access to several public schools, for education from elementary school through high school. There are also a few private schools and charter schools in this region of Ohio that students of Newark have access to. One of the Ohio State University’s campuses is located in Newark, which provides many great local educational resources to the residents of Newark.
