Violet, Ohio was named for the beautiful flowers that were once sprinkled all throughout the area. The first person to stumble upon Violet, was George Kirke. Kirke was an old Revolutionary War veteran, who used Violet as a rest stop when passing through the area. He built himself a simple log cabin that protected him from bad weather, and wild animals. Eventually, Kirke’s land was bought by Abraham Pickering, who purchased most of the land that is present day Violet and Pickerington.
Early life in Violet was vibrant and rich. Settlers lived amidst a beautiful canopy of nature, and worked side by side, to help each other build their new homes. They had a good rapport with the Native Americans who dwelled nearby; and it was not uncommon to see the children of the settlers playing with the children of the Native Americans. Times were simple and peaceful, and the only real worry was the weather and the animals. Residents would often run across evidence of wolves, bears, and wildcats; all of which would be a cause for alarm. The wolves were the most concerning and were known to chase a chicken all the way up to the door of a house. All night, they would loudly proclaimed their threatening presence through their eerie howls. The bears were also a problem. They seemed extremely eager to participate in the evening meals, especially when pork was on the menu. Life so close to the wild, was not for the faint of heart.
The northern part of Violet was known for the large flocks of wild turkeys and pigeons. This made good eating for the local settlers. As one would expect, turkey was a very common meal in the fall and winter; and many farmers would even make a little extra money by dressing the turkeys and selling them at the local market. They could tutor today’s butchers in how to prepare a fresh and delicious Thanksgiving meal. The pigeons were so prevalent that when they flew in to rest on the trees, the weight of all them together would break the branches. They were known to ruin the farmers’ fields and it was no simple task for farmers to protect their crops.
Eventually, Violet would no longer resemble the quiet frontier lifestyle of the early settlers. It officially became a township, and more and more people started moving into the area. Over time, the untamed wild transformed into the modern development it is today. Violet is still a growing area, and even the township’s motto is, “A great place to grow your family or business;” proving that what was true back in the early 1800’s, is still true today.
Violet tutors want all students to do well in school. If your student is struggling, a Violet tutor could be just what you need. Every student deserves the chance to succeed.
