Pickerington, Ohio is the home of the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum. The Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum is a product of the American Motorcyclist Association, and was created to honor those that have contributed to motorcycling in all different capacities. The museum also showcases several motorcycles, riding gear, and plenty of motorcycling memorabilia. The American Motorcyclist Association is a nonprofit organization that works to, “promote the motorcycling lifestyle and protect the future of motorcycling,” according to their mission statement. By creating the Hall of Fame Museum, they are able to celebrate the culture and the history that created it.
One of the many individuals recognised by the Hall of Fame was Giacomo Agostini. Agostini was one of the first motorcycle superstars. Over his seventeen year carrier, he won fifteen World Grand Prix titles, twelve Isle of Man TT crowns, and 122 Grand Prixs. He also helped the sport gain a lot of attention when he won the Daytona 200 in 1974. Agostini is remembered as one of the greatest riders of all time.
Another famous motorist inducted into the hall of fame was Roy Artley. Artley began his riding career as a fine china delivery rider, but the company he worked for quickly realized his gutsy driving was not a match for their fragile packages. Arley would go on to be an incredible city-to-city racer and is still a record holder. Artley once even won a competition, despite the fact that during a pit stop at a gas station, the attendant accidentally filled his tank up with water instead of gas! After breaking down because of the mistake, Artley was able to get the bike running and come back for the win. Artley could tutor others in keeping cool under stressful situations.
Another iconic figure in motorcycling was Frank Baer, also known as Fritzie Baer. Baer was not only a racer, he was also a dealer. He worked for a major motorcycle manufacturer, and was also a club president, a race promoter, an announcer, a sponsor, a mechanic, and an AMA official. Baer is known for his contributions in promoting motorcycling and for helping create programs that clubs still use today.
The Motorcycle Hall of Fame does not only include racers and racing enthusiasts; it also includes those that made contributions towards motorcycling in general. Pioneers like Arthur, Walter, and William Davidson, and their friend William Harley, have all found their place in the museum. These four visionaries were the founders of the legendary Harley-Davidson company, that was instrumental in moving the motorcycle industry forward. What began as a dream to make bicycles motorized, turned into a hobby, sport, pastime, culture, and heritage that no one could have ever predicted.
