    About Loma Linda

Loma Linda tutors speculate as to whether it’s “something in the water”. Residents of Loma Linda have a way above average rate of longevity, more so than any other area of the U.S.A. as a whole. There is naturally speculation as to the reason behind the residents leading longer lives. The over-riding belief is that it is a combination of factors, including climate, and standard of living, but attribute it largely to the Adventist cultural health and diet practices. Many residents observing their religious traditions are vegetarian. The city also has rigid controls on alcohol sales; a citywide ban on smoking and the church-owned grocery store does not sell meat at all. Loma Linda tutors suspect these are all key factors. The city has therefore been named a ‘Blue Zone’. An anthropological term first used in “National Geographic Magazine” by Dan Buettner, reserved to describe “the characteristic lifestyles and environments of the world’s longest-lived people.” There are very few “Blue zones” in the world. Dan Buettner’s article listed only five geographic areas that qualify for this title. They are Okinawa (Japan), Sardinia (Italy), Nicoya (Costa Rica), Icaria (Greece) and amongst the Seventh-day Adventists in Loma Linda, California.

Loma Linda is the home of one of the largest congregations of Seventh Day Adventists in the world. It is a distinguished by its observance of Saturday the seventh day of the week in Christian and Jewish calendars as Sabbath. The seventh-day Sabbath is observed from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday. This observes the Hebrew practice of beginning a day at sundown, and the Genesis creation narrative wherein an “evening and morning” established a day. The Seventh Day Adventist Church also holds strong emphasis on the imminent second coming of Jesus Christ. The belief is part of most Christian eschatology (study of ‘end of an age’) and is based on messianic prophecies. (The hope or belief in a messiah.) In Loma Linda due to the large number of residents who are Seventh-day Adventists, the city (up until 2011, due to Post Office budget cut backs,) was one of a small number that had their weekend delivery service on Sunday instead of Saturday.

Another popular trait of Seventh-day Adventists is favoring vegetarianism. Loma Linda tutors find that most restaurants in the area cater for vegetarians and offer multiple options or often a full menu. Even their drive-thru fast food chain “Baker’s Drive-Thru” was the first to offer a vegetarian menu. They originally named it “Loma Linda Kitchen” vegetarian menu, although it has since dropped the name but has expanded its vegetarian options.
