Huber Heights Tutors Come To You

Huber Heights, Ohio is home to the Historical Farm at Carriage Hill MetroPark. The Historical Farm at Carriage Hill MetroPark is a step back into the nineteenth century agricultural lifestyle. The farm has fields of traditionally grown crops, several nineteenth century houses and farm buildings, and historic barns full of period livestock; all cultivated and preserved in a way that demonstrates how people lived during that period of history. It also offers visitors the chance to try their hands at nineteenth century living, and forgotten trades like blacksmithing, woodworking, cooking, quilting, caning and more. Visitors will also be tutored in traditional sustainable farming; done the way farmers would have done it so long ago.

The goal of the Historical Farm is to preserve the cultural heritage of nineteenth century farmers; and educate the public in the history that helped shape our nation. Even the land that the farm resides on, once belonged to a hard working American farming family. The Arnold family lived on the farm in the 1800’s, during a time of prosperity and abundance. When piecing together the Arnold family’s story, there were over forty-six diaries and account books, and plenty of oral history to help ensure the authenticity of depiction of their day to day lives. These records even dictated the crops, livestock, restoration choices, and activities the facilities offer. The Arnold family’s story helps visitors understand the realities of life in the 1800’s.

Out in the barns, there are heritage breeds of livestock including Merino sheep, Barred Plymouth Rock chickens, and Jersey cows. The farm’s crops are also heritage varieties and several different crops are grown including wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Of course only traditional farming technology is used, meaning that much of the work is done by the Percheron draft horses. The livestock help bring the farm to life, and the working horses help visitors see how crops were grown without the help of modern machinery.

In addition to the hands-on experience in farming and agriculture, the MetroPark has a fun and interactive Visitors Center. The center shares the personal stories of the Arnold family; and also has a Children’s Interactive Classroom. There is a recreated house, barn, and school room; and each exhibit is full of interactive learning experiences. There is even a Country Store Gift Shop with penny candy and other history and farm related souvenirs. At the Daniel Arnold House, there are historical interpreters that are dressed in 1880’s attire, who give tours and lectures on the history of the house. Visitors can also watch wood stove cooking, baking, canning, butter churning, and see the treadle machine sew and weave. The Historical Farm at Carriage Hill MetroPark gives visitors a complete picture of life on the nineteenth century farm.
