Dayton was the birthplace of Orville Wright, one of the biggest names in aviation; and is where the Wright brothers invented powered flight. This meant that the aircraft did not simply glide, it actually used onboard propulsion and mechanical power to stay up in the air. The Dayton Ballet was founded in 1937, and is the second oldest regional ballet company in the U.S. But, the company is not just known for its history; it is also known for being the “Company of Premieres;” because of its commitment to continually perform new works. In fact, the Dayton Ballet puts out a new full-length ballet every two years. The company looks to the future, but also honors Ballet’s timeless traditions by incorporating one traditional ballet, as well as The Nutcracker, and two contemporary works into its schedule each year. These four productions inspire audiences to appreciate the history of Ballet, while being excited for its future.

The Dayton Ballet would not exist today if it had not have been for Josephine Schwarz. Throughout her career, Schwarz studied and danced ballet in Chicago, New York and Europe; she even attended the School of American Ballet, and danced on Broadway. Unfortunately, during a performance on Broadway she was injured, and had to return home to Dayton. Once home, Jo and her sister, Hermene, decided to bring together the schools best dancers, and create, “The Experimental Group for Young Dancers;” the company that would become The Dayton Ballet. Jo worked hard to help Dayton become a prominent dance center; and is also created with being a pioneer of the American regional ballet movement. Jo could tutor others in how to turn your misfortunes into opportunities; if she had never been injured, there may have never been a Dayton Ballet.
