The area now known as Douglasville was previously known by Native Americans as ‘skint chestnut’ because tribes and traders that lived in the area used a particular chestnut tree to find their way. Native Americans stripped the tree of its bark to make it stand out more as a landmark. Later white settlers changed the name to “Skinned Chestnut.” In 1870 Skinned Chestnut was selected as the Douglas County seat and not long after that the city name officially changed to Douglasville.
