A local businessman with the last name of “Carr” is the town’s namesake, and Mr. Carr was very influential in the local milling industries that made this area so successful in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Providing jobs to local Carrboro residents as well as residents from many of the surrounding communities, the local mills in Carrboro were very successful and profitable until around the time of the Great Depression, which ultimately closed many of these mills by the time it was over. Other industries moved into the area, and the University of North Carolina brought many young professionals to the community of Carrboro. Today, many of the old mill buildings and industrial structures are on a list of protected buildings in the Carrboro Commercial Historic District, which itself is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Known for its vibrant and popular Farmer’s Market, Carrboro hosts this weekly street market where locals can come to buy directly from local farmers and crafters. The Carrboro Farmer’s Market has been around since the 1970s and is very popular among the local students that come here from the nearly university campus.
