    About Durham

Durham is a beautiful and diverse city in the northern region of the great state of North Carolina. With a vibrant arts culture and a sizzling music scene, Durham is a modern city that boasts many educational and extracurricular resources. Families that live here love that there is always something to do, and with a high quality education system and beautiful local parks and recreational facilities, what’s not to love about Durham?

Home to the Bull Durham Blues Festival, Durham brings in thousands of blues genre music enthusiasts each year. This isn’t the only local music festival, however, as there are also several jazz events, classical music concerts, and rock shows as well. Beyond music, Durham is also at the forefront of many other arts, hosting the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival and several dance festivals as well. Durham is a great place to live because there are always so many different and unique cultural festivals to be involved in. One local community group that has done a lot to improve the local art culture here in Durham is the Durham Association for Downtown Arts. This committee has worked very hard to bring more art and diverse cultural events to Durham, and is a nonprofit organization.

A unique artistic art center, Scrap Exchange, is located here in Durham, and it has garnered national attention as being the biggest reuse art establishment in the United States. This nonprofit art center provides a creative environment for artists and art enthusiasts, bringing attention to new-age art and the idea of using existing materials and repurposing them with an artistic narrative. Another interesting art venue located in Durham is the Nasher Museum of Art, which displays a wide variety of installations and galleries, of both local artists and global artists.

Home to several institutions of higher education including Duke University, North Carolina Central University, and several other community colleges, Durham boasts many great local educational and cultural resources as a result. With Durham’s younger population served by the Durham Public School District, local students have access to nearly fifty public schools from elementary school through high school. Beside these local public schools, there are also a number of local charter schools and private schools, providing alternative options for local education here in Durham. For any local students that might need a little extra help, local Durham tutors are available. These local tutors can meet with each student one-on-one to help them tackle their individual struggles, building skills and overcoming obstacles to achieve educational success.
