Subject Competence I am 1 year into a PhD program in Linguistics, with experience teaching undergraduates. My research in Linguistics has demonstrated my composition skills and the subject of Linguistics itself sheds a great deal of insight on grammar and linguistic devices employed in writing styles.Interpersonal Skills As mentioned above, I have demonstrated success in various teaching and advising roles which required the skills to connect with adults and youth from a wide range of backgrounds. I have strong communication skills in one-on-one settings, as exemplified by my role as a Sr. Academic Advisor at the University of New Mexico for three years.Reliability I have been very successful in balancing major commitments in recents years, including graduate school, professional employment, and family commitments (I have three young children). I only pursue graduate study and employment that I am passionate about: I plan to use my Ph.D. in Linguistics to conduct research and teach, and my professional employment has been focused on advising and teaching roles, particularly at the college level. I take pleasure in helping others achieve their goals.

As a recent graduate from one of the top colleges in the nation with my BA in English Literature, my enthusiasm for my subject enables me to be successful and passionate as an English tutor. I am considerably patient and understand the different learning processes and preferences that different students have. I know that there is no "proven" method or any one way to teach anybody anything, but that each person requires an approach that is well crafted to their strengths and weaknesses as well as their learning styles. Currently I have a job teaching chess at elementary and middle schools which requires me to adhere to a schedule that changes times and schools each day. This gives me several different times and locations to keep track of and be on time to for each week.

I would be a great tutor because I thoroughly enjoy working with youth of all ages and I think that this is necessary for being successful in this field of work. I graduated Cal Poly with a great GPA and was on the Dean's list multiple times - therefore I know the commitment and patience it takes to succeed academically I have worked with various youth and therefore I know that each student learns in a unique way, and I believe that I will be able to quickly recognize their learning patters and find the best ways to teach my students this information. I am also a very reliable person; I am always on time and know the importance of honoring commitments and paying attention to detail as I have been working as an administrative assistant for a professor at Cal Poly throughout this school year.

I spent two weeks in South Carolina with a program that partnered with Save the Children. While there I volunteered at an elementary school and worked with a group of second graders. I created lesson plans for each day and guided the children through reading and math activities. This experience was extremely rewarding as I formed relationships with all of my students and got to know them on an individual level.My senior year in high school I tutored a third grader in math and reading comprehension. I met once a week with the student and reviewed his homework for that week.As a communications major I have strong interpersonal skills that will benefit me as a tutor. I have worked with students in the past and genuinely enjoy helping them become more confident in different subjects. Building strong relationships with both students and their families is important to me, and I understand the importance of being punctual. I believe that a tutor should be friendly and motivating and I hope to help students gain confidence in their classes.

I believe that I would be a good tutor for Grade Potential because I love working with and motivating people. I have experience in leadership and communication and I enjoy helping others set goals for themselves in the work that they do. I hold myself accountable and responsible in everything that I do and I think that my attitude in that regard radiates with others. I have always been a dedicated student and I think that students seeking tutoring/asking for help also show that they are dedicated to their studies and deserve the best possible tutors. I am reliable and independent and know how to set goals and priorities for myself.

My educational background would enable me to have comfortable, active conversations with students regarding the subject material. As a trained counselor I have worked with clients of all ages and, as such, have developed strong interpersonal skills, listening skills, and an ability to work with students of all backgrounds. Particularly when it comes to a field such as Psychology, it is important to be able to describe concepts and phenomena is basic terms; so much of the theory can be wordy or appear complicated, my clinical experience and extensive education in psychology and counseling enable me to discuss these topics with ease and familiarity.I am an extremely punctual person and know how important consistency is to educational success. I feel it is important, as a tutor, to work with the student to understand their own learning styles and approach the topic in ways that benefit their overall understanding of a subject. College-level courses are typically taught in a manner that strives to reach students of all learning styles - while this has its advantages, it also means that students lose individualized attention and sometimes struggle to fully absorb information in lecture-style courses. As a tutor, you have the opportunity to supplement this traditional learning environment with a hands-on, individualized approach to learning.

I believe that the real key to tutor someone is to be able to teach many different methods to a student. This methods are either visually, or basic examples that would lead to the understanding of the question. I know that professors teach a certain way that a student cannot understand and from experience I can relate to them. Relating to a student is very important because you find a common background where they feel comfortable to keep learning, ask questions and understanding the problem. Besides knowing my "stuff", I kept my responsibility with my students and if they needed more help even after I clocked out, I would stay and help them because the feeling of being stuck, is frustrating. There has not been a time where I was not irresponsible tutoring but if there was I would tell my manager two days in advance. Also to tell my students sorry that I could not make it but feel free to ask anyone else Ill be back tomorrow.
