Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I have held jobs that have given me experience teaching a wide spectrum of ages and personalities. At some point I have worked with kids ages kindergarten through college.Also, as a college student going into my senior year I have advanced knowledge of life sciences and math through calculus. This gives me an advanced knowledge of the subjects and a thorough knowledge of lower level subjects.I am home from college for the next two and a half months and can give all my time to the students I am tutoring. This means I can be counted on to give all my time and energy to the students.I have been a middle school and high school tutor for the past two years. I meet with three students at least one time a week to go over their classes and help them with whatever homework they may have. I have mostly helped the students in chemistry and math (algebra, algebra 2, and precalc).I was also a lab teaching assistant for a biology course for college sophomores and juniors in last fall semester. The coursework was mostly for introductory ecology, genetics and evolution.

My goal is to become a bilingual teacher for primary school, I believe that exposing myself to different situations and experiences will allow me to familiarize me with the profession. Grade Potential demonstrates to be a tutoring program that cares about giving quality tutoring by qualified tutors, and with my past experience I feel as though I meet the requirements and can go beyond what is being asked of me. Being reliable and flexible is a part of the education profession, I understand that it is necessary to be dependable so that the students are given the opportunity to get the most out of their tutoring.

Being a professional in whatever field I pursue is something I pride myself on. Anything less than that and I am betraying myself, not the company I work for.I have taught in some of the most challenging environments a teacher can experience and have always been respected for my work ethic and drive. Frankly, when you are teaching a class of 50 students who barely speak english, maintaining control and forward momentum come from your ability to make the material engage the students at any cost. I have always been able to adjust my teaching methods between the auditory, visual and kinesthetic, depending on how exactly the student best learns. Many teachers take their ego into the learning environment and blame their students when the content is not mastered. I don't have that problem.I was a multifaceted social science tutor while i attended Berkeley, and I was also an employee of the Linda-mood bell tutoring center in Santa Barbara. There I worked with children and teenagers who were struggling with learning disorders ranging from Tourettes syndrome to Aspergers syndrome.

Aside from my professional experiences, I believe I'd be an excellent fit for Grade Potential for my enthusiasm and attitude. I'm upbeat, positive and I always try to create an positive environment for the students I work with. Most importantly, I try to listen to the students I work with. What are their strengths? Where do they struggle? What has worked for them and what hasn't? Being able to problem solve and work in conjunction with the student is just as important as having a grasp of the material itself. In regards to keeping with appointments and commitments, I actively held tutoring clients as well as a full-time job internationally and never missed/cancelled a class/appointment aside from catching the flu! Any past supervisors would be able to attest to my ability to come to work prepared, on-time, and ready to work with a good attitude!

As a teacher with over a dozen years of experience, I have a proven record of being reliable, responsible, presentable and engaging. As a mother, housewife, social manager, I practice skills of: organization, scheduling, documentation, communication, public relations, collaboration, presentation; which will all serve me as a "Grade Potential Tutor".The majority of my tutoring experience has been within a school setting; whether that was spending extra time with an individual student in a "whole class setting", "small group" instruction or in after-school homework help.I tutored ESL to non-English speaking students using a diversity of methodologies: immersion, whole language, dramatization, technology, music, peer-tutoring.The greatest challenge and on-going tutoring I do is with my 9 year-old daughter on a daily basis!!

I am very patient, organized, well mannered, and even tempered. Both of my previous jobs involved working with youth. My past summer job was a swim Instructor at the YMCA. Patience when teaching youth and communication are key to meet individual goals.I have past experience working as an AVID Tutor (Advancement Via Individual Determination). I have over two years of experience working as an ADVID tutor as well as an independent tutor. As an ADVID tutor I tutored grades 9-12 in math and science and helped prepare high school students for college readiness.

I have had an unusual career trajectory. Studying acting led to a career in stage management. The skills I fostered in stage management proved invaluable when I moved into the world of office culture with my job managing the office of a senior manager at the New York Fed. And now I am working toward completing my Ph.D. in Theater Studies, having come full circle. All of these experiences, however, have one thing in common; they all require exceptional communication and collaboration skills, as well as a high degree of sensitivity and emotional intelligence. I spend quite a bit of time with undergraduates in the classroom teaching a range of subjects from play analysis to theater history to acting, as well as working one-on-one with students as a Writing Center tutor at SBCC. All of these situations require an alertness to the dynamics in the classroom or in the one-on-one tutoring session. In short, my people skills are quite good.Teaching students to know material for themselves is the cornerstone of the work I do as a Writing Center tutor at SBCC. Finding the balance between guiding a student while simultaneously placing the responsibility for the work on their shoulders is a delicate thing, but I feel confident that my tutoring practice does a good job of not only assisting students with the work at hand but also equipping them to take ownership of their work.Of all the skills/attributes I've fostered throughout my career, the one I'm probably best known for is reliability. To put it simply, I worked for several years as a stage manager and several years as an executive assistant. In both of those careers, I was depended upon by individuals at all levels of the organization to keep things running smoothly.

My goal is for students to learn as much as possible. In order for this to occur students need to feel supported and confident. I create such an environment. While working through the content, ask key questions to try to assess where students are having difficulty understanding. I patiently work with them to guide their understanding of the content.I am a reliable person in all areas of life. I have reliable transportation, arrive on time, and always follow through on my commitments.
