Although it's been some time since I graduated from college, I know biology really well! I've taught in this area and I've worked as a biomedical researcher for 22 years. I taught during college, just after receiving my BA, before working at Amgen. I also helped out in my son's classroom in elementary school, leading lessons in science. I've been told I have a knack for distilling complex material into an understandable form.I was also a very good student myself (had a 4.0 GPA throughout college), so I know what it takes to succeed.I am very reliable and responsible, take my commitments very seriously.

I love encouraging women to enter the sciences! I think women are underrepresented in the science and providing confidence in their courses is a really rewarding experience. I am an extremely reliable person and have never had to cancel any of my previous tutoring appointments without advanced notice.Previous experience tutoring 7th grade, 11th, and 12th grade science courses

I am very patient and very easy to talk to. Students are never afraid of asking me questions. I often take time to figure out where and why they are struggling before I provide any help. For example, with my experience teaching chemistry in college, I learned a lot about how the students think and what the most difficult part is to them. Some were not obvious because it is the lack of the basic knowledge in other subjects, such as math. My knowledge and experience of tutoring in other subjects also help me better assist the students if needed because of the correlations between these subjects.I enjoy teaching and care about my students. One of the students from my chemistry class gave me a review "I appreciate that she wants the students to succeed and that helps". As an adjunct faculty, I am only paid for the time that I was actually in class. But I am willing to spend many more hours in my office preparing for the class and hold office hours (which is not required for adjunct faculty) for the students because I feel responsible to them. Now that I am teaching the course online, I check my emails several times a day to ensure prompt response to the students and a student wrote me in an email "I can't tell you how many times I was in an online class and it took a week or more for me to get any reply from the instructor. Really appreciate your quick response". I always try my best to help the students. It is in their success that I see mine.

I think I would be a good tutor at Grade Potential because of my experience, drive, reliability and communication. I have experience working with students in traditional classroom settings and non-traditional skills based environments. I have helped students learn facts, information, and skills by finding alternative explanations and visuals to what their teacher used in the classroom to find a way that will work for them. If I don't know the answer, then I will say so and look up the answer.I am driven to help students. While competing my long term substitute teacher appointment, I discovered many of the students were not ready to learn because of outside factors in their lives. I just completed a two year commitment at The North Carolina Outward Bound School in Florida working with students on achieving their success with skills such as communication, teamwork, and confidence (no academics were focused on). Students sometimes need some guidance to fill their full potential. Also, I believe that helping people is not doing their work for them. I am a believer in the "I do, We do, You do" learning progression and making sure the student identifies all of the information he/she already knows.I am a reliable person who has a record of keeping with my appointments with substitute teaching appointments, lacrosse officiating, coming to work on time, and keeping appointments with friends and family. If something comes up, then I will communicate my needs and work to compromise to meet everyones needs as fully as possible.

Teaching is a good way to know what I have already known better. Additionally, I can feel a very strong sense of achievement when I help others to learn. As an international student, it will also be a good chance for me to know and communicate with local students and families so that I can learn the American culture which I am not able to learn from school. I also like hard-working students and feel good if i can help them.I have experience to teach elementary level and middle school level students back in China. I always receive positive feedback and comments from them. During my high school time, I also taught my classmates and they thought my teaching is clear and very helpful.

I have 35 years classroom teaching experience. I love children and relate easily to them. I have the ability to put children at ease which facilitates good progress. Establishing a bond with each student is paramount to their success. Because I have so much experience in teaching, I have used and implemented a variety of teaching styles and philosophies. I have also had extensive experience teaching ESL students. I am an expert at checking for understanding. In other words, just because a student says they understand does not mean they really do. I make sure they become extremely comfortable with stating that they do not understand, and constantly check for understanding along the way. The student has to trust in the fact that I will never respond to them in such a way that they regret admitting their lack of understanding. I also have multiple approaches to teaching a concept based on my experience. I do not make any decisions lightly. I always take the time to consider all the aspects of my decisions. I pray for guidance before making any decision. After teaching for 35 years, raising a family, and being married for 25 years, I understand commitment.

I am a huge fan of one on one style teaching. I have an instinct for finding alternative approaches to teaching that will best benefit a client. It is so rewarding to witness that moment when something "clicks" for your student and to know you contributed to their success. I take great pride in the work that I do, and I greatly value my reputation. This would be reflected not only in the quality of my instruction, but also in my punctuality, reliability, and respectful rapport I would establish with my clients. I am passionate about the power of one on one tutoring, and I am looking to establish myself as a professional, rather than casual, tutor. I hope to do that by becoming a part of Grade Potential.I tutored Spanish officially at the 100 and 200 level for six months while I was in college. I tutored my aunt through her college statistics courses. I tutored a friend of the family whenever he ran into trouble in math class during middle school and high school. I tutored my elementary school-age home-schooled cousin in Spanish for about a year.

I believe I would be a good candidate for this position for a couple of reasons. Not only do I excel at all levels of math, but I strive to be a high school math teacher when I finish college. I have been tutoring for a while now and have realized that I work very well with kids of all ages. I am a very punctual person and have never turned in any assignment late without a very valid reason nor have I ever been late to work. Finally, I would not see this as just a "job" I would see this as an opportunity to become better at what I want to do with the rest of my working career. This may sound a little formal but I am honestly a very personable person who works well with all kinds of people.I have worked for a summer school math program program for the last two summers through the Dixon Unified School District. During this time I worked with sixth graders through eighth graders tutoring math of levels pre-algebra through geometry. During the time I spent at this summer school program half of the students I worked with were Migrant-Ed students. I tutored at the local junior high while in high school for math, science, and history. Also during high school I tutored a few students in Algebra 2 and Pre-Calc.
