I have a broad range of education and experience, and am a people person. Although I have enjoyed classroom settings, I prefer teaching/tutoring in small group or one-to- one settings.Taught ESL for two years in Central Europe from 2001 to 2003.Tutored ESL for the SLO Literacy Council in 2004Taught ESL to international students at California Coast Language Academy in Spring 2010.

I have always had a passion for education and a drive to see students succeed. I hope to someday become a math teacher, focusing in Algebra. I love math and strive to help students who are intimidated by math work through their fears, to help them grasp the math basics needed to succeed in school. I also have a compassion, understanding and the patience to work with students who have disabilities and special learning needs.I have been babysitting/kid-sitting since I was twelve. Helping the kids I was in care of with their homework was always part of the job. Also, for three years I worked with San Luis Obispo's Park and Recreation Department. I was a before and after-school teacher and helped students with their homework daily.

I would be a good tutor because I am very strong at reading comprehension and writing essays on various topics. I have much experience in writing, including taking honors English courses and excelling, and also writing for newspapers and putting entire speeches together. I have a quick eye when it comes to catching grammar, spelling, word choice, and sentence structure mistakes, and I also am strong at outlining essays and helping people with the basics of how to write efficiently and effectively.I have tutored 1st-4th graders in areas such as math, spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension. Currently, I edit many of my friends' essays on a regular basis, whether it be from thinking of various topics and subtopics to write about, or simply just proofreading and editing for grammar and sentence structure. I have also helped other students in reading comprehension and analyzing books they may be reading for an English course, as well as help people with speeches they need to present.

I feel like one of my greatest strengths is in seeing where people are coming from in their thought process and perspective. This helps me to see where certain problems are originating that are hindering a student's learning.Going through one of the most rigorous highschool programs in the state, Long Beach Poly's Pace program, which bases its coursework around highlevel and AP classes, I have more in depth knowledge and understanding in classes given to me by some of the greatest teachersAlways having been a student athlete, I have much experience balancing school and sports, including varsity and club volleyball, and cross country. I feel like this experience helps me relate to students who are going through the same difficulties, and gives me the ability to give helpful advice on the subject.

As I stated in my tutoring experience, I have already had experience teaching my peers. I can adapt to individual learning styles and remain patient while they learn at their own pace. I also have experience with younger children. Over the summer of 2008 and 2009 I was a camp counselor at the Placer Nature Center where I led children ages 4-12 in nature oriented activities. I was able to maintain control of my group of campers while still allowing them to learn and have as much fun as possible. I had to deal with children of a variety of ages and learned to deal with some children that were not very cooperative. However, using patience and a willingness to push the children to learn I was able to ensure that everyone had fun and gained more knowledge about nature and conservation.

I am very enthusiast and confident in the subjects I teach and I believe this energy creates a reassuring atmosphere for the student. It helps the student realize that the subject they have difficulty with can be figured out and even be entertaining. I had difficulty with math growing up and I often had to seek a tutor's aid. There were a plethora of them: spanning from bored and disinterested to completely engaged and prepared with learning techniques to help me. You can guess which ones I remember. I wish to emulate these helpful tutors and help students realize things like essays are not as daunting as they seem.I have tutored through the English Department at Cal Poly and through them have tutored a Cuesta student but no one else since then. I regularly babysit, the childrens' age ranging from 5 to 14, and I have often helped them out with their homework.

I enjoy working with individual students and assisting them in learning. I also have helped students in learning better ways and methods of of studying and organization. My master's thesis focused on differentiated learning using Bloom's Taxonomy and Vygotsky's ZPD. In having this research background I better understand the levels of learning and abilities that a student has and can improve upon.I have expertise in teaching all grade levels K thru 12, college level courses, and adults. I teach English, history, language arts, English Language Development, Science (general science, biology, physical science, life science, environmental), basic math, algebra, statistics, computer technology, art. and CAHSEE prep.I am also a member of SCIPP-QuarkNet which is through Santa Cruz Institute of Particle Physics and which offers teacher training workshops and student learning opportunities in physics.In addition, I must admit that I have had difficulty in gaining employment due to the economy and teacher lay-offs, particularly in the Lompoc area which is where I live. I am interested in working as a tutor for the employment aspect.

I love Psychology! I am patient and I make a real attempt to see things from my student's perspective. I strive to give examples of real life situations to make psychology more applicable to students and to their everyday lives.I have tutored Intro to Psychology for multiple students as well as other higher level Psychology classes.
