Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

As a child, I struggled in school. When I was in 2nd grade, I was diagnosed with having a learning disability so I was placed in a RSP class (resource specialist program) to help me with reading and spelling. Then, in high school and college I struggled with math so I had math tutors. I know what it feels like to be behind, because of my experience as a struggling student I have a soft spot in my heart for students who are also struggling. Through the years I learned that when you are behind, it doesn't mean you have to stay behind, with determination and a tutor's help, you can succeed. I also had to learn to make a mental shift in my mind that I was not dumb, I just learn differently. And that it's OK that sometimes it takes me longer to learn something new. When I help students I like to use my story to encourage them. I tell them that I started school with a learning disability and failing subjects, but graduated college with a 4.0 GPA and honors. I like to emphasis that not everyone is good at everything. They may struggle with science, but have strengths in other areas, for example sports or music. With students I like to encourage them in what they're good at and help them in the areas they are struggling with. I believe each student can succeed with the help and encouragement they need.

I would be a good tutor for grade potential because I have the experience and the personality that makes a good educator. I always put my students first and truly feel that when they succeed - I succeed.I have several years of tutoring experience - from university onwards. While at university, I commonly tutored classmates in composition, literature and German courses. Additionally, I worked with the Learning Annex for several years as a creative writing tutor for their adult courses. I also worked for many years as an ESL teacher and ran 1-to-1 courses on several different subject and regularly tutored students of general, business, ESP and exam English.

I have a high interest in helping other individuals, particularly youth to achieve their highest potential. I have experiece as both a mentor and a tutor and have been very successful in working along side both young men and women to teach not only learning but also how to learn and importantly how to apply what is learned. I have a long career in business from post college first job as a design engineer, a transition into high tech marketing and sales leading to Vice-Presdient of Sales & Marketing at many Silicon Valley technology companies, a transition to operations and ultimately founding of two companies and President & CEO of three companies.

I've always done well with school - receiving awards in high school for being the top student in math, science, English and Latin.With age and teaching, I have become more patient and thorough in my work - learning how to methodically analyze and explain how I would approach a problem or assignment.My engineering degree taught me the basics of project management - breaking down large tasks into smaller tasks to make them more manageable. I use this in tutoring all the time - often helping the student to create a plan to tackle the assignment.Finally I really enjoy the "aha" moment when a student "gets" the material for himself; it is incredibly rewarding to me.Most recently I have tutored for all college level writing projects at a Writing Lab for Division I athletes at the University of Tennessee.I have taught English 101 and 102 - rhetoric, writing and research skills at the University of Tennessee. There I tutored my own students.I also was a teaching assistant for English 206: Introduction to Shakespeare.

I enjoy helping students feel confident about their work. One of the most rewarding experiences is to effectively help others learn with the least amount of strain possible. I absolutely love to teach! I consider myself to be exceptionally adept at explaining complicated and abstract concepts in an easy to grasp manner using metaphors and step-by-step instruction.I understand that everybody learns in different ways so I try to tailor my instruction specifically to each person.My past experience as a tutor has provided me with a solid foundation upon which to base my future tutoring sessions.Additionally, I should note that I am so dedicated to the idea of teaching that I am committed to teaching English in South Korea starting some time in November (so I am only available for short term tutoring).I tutored extensively in high school on a number of different subjects.
