I was a coach and judge for high school speech and debate during college, and I worked with students of all skill levels improve their writing and speaking skills. Getting students to have to confidence to speak isn't easy, but those skills are transferrable to students who are struggling with school.

I have a genuine interest in guiding students through struggle, toward achievement, and possess the patience and communication skills needed to be a successful educator. I have dedicated most of my professional career to helping students through the learning process and have developed an deep understanding of best pedagogical practices that would be most effective in meeting the needs of diverse groups of students in various educational settings.I volunteered and/or worked as a tutor throughout my high school and college careers. After beginning my credentialing program, I began to work as a full-time high school mathematics teacher, which I was fortunate enough to do for nine years. I have most recently begun working with a team that develops diagnostic tests used to assess student understanding and inform instruction in secondary mathematics courses. This work has further deepened my understanding of best practices in test development and in the formative use of data to address common student misconceptions.

I was an Independent Contractor as an Applied Mathematics Tutor. I tutored students, K-12, in all levels of mathematics, including SAT and ACT prep. Also, all four years as an undergraduate, I was a Statistician for the Bethel College Men's basketball team.Additionally, I tutor every student at his/her level. For example, when a student dislikes math, it is mostly because a student didn't understand it and had a very bad experience at an early age. Therefore, I take that student and relate mathematics to something he/she enjoys doing. And go over it again and again until the student understands completly before moving on. Every child deserves a chance.One of the things I enjoy tutoring is multiplication tables. I tell a student you only need to know half of them and the other half are the same numbers in reverse. Example, 2 x 6=12; 6 x 2=12. (The numbers are in reverse with the same answer)

I would be a good tutor because I am very open minded. I am willing to go about teaching a different way to adapt to the students way of thinking and how they learn. I am a very laid back and patient person who take the time to ensure the student is getting the help they need.

I enjoy the process of researching and sharing the knowledge I have gained with others. I take time out of my own schedule as a student every day to tutor my own siblings with their homework, ranging from elementary-level to college-level subjects. Although I am an English major, I excel in other subjects such as mathematics, science, and social studies. Additionally, I have taken courses such as Adolescent Development, Educational Technologies, Developing Literacy in Secondary Schools, etc. in pursuit of a teaching credential in the near future. I understand how important tutoring can be because I benefit from these services myself; therefore, I know that missing one lesson can cause a student to fall behind. Furthermore, it is important to establish a good schedule between the student, tutor, and parent as these lessons are a time frame that everyone has dedicated towards helping the student improve.

In addition to having tutoring experience, I am currently studying to become TEFL certified. This is giving me a deeper understanding of the mechanics of learning and how to best facilitate the students' success. I really enjoy helping students come to a better understanding of the topics they need assistance with; I am very intrinsically motivated in this way.Additionally, I am completely open about my availability and always do my best to avoid scheduling conflicts.

I would be a good tutor because I have experience and because I care about people. I consider myself a people person because I'm intersted in how people feel and how I can contribute so the can feel good about themselves, about life and about other. Also, I love awakening and nurturing the inner artist of people. I have one semester of teaching experience. I was the teacher's assistant of Tessie Withmore, MA in Fine Arts at an advance painting class in SDSU. I commented and provided feedback on student's work on how they can improve technically and conceptually in order to archive a visually successful piece. One time in particular I guided a student step by step on how to mix realistic skin tones and I demonstrated how to blend the paint on the canvas to achieve a realistic finish.

I would be a good tutor because I know for a fact that teaching is not only mastering and showing a subject, but raising students into responsible adults as well. I like to be the kind of teacher that change the whole pupil’s perspective about my subject and I know I can be the kind that will make them love it. I know that it is important to have pleasant and close relationships with your pupils, with excellent rapport, but with the respect and authority that the relationship needs. I like to make myself approachable for students and create a safe environment where they can share not only their academic concerns, but also their personal problems. I encourage my students to get the best results, to challenge themselves and to know how to overcome obstacles, not only academically, but by developing personally. One of the main principles for me in teaching is that you must teach your students to learn how to learn.
