Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I feel that I would be an excellent tutor for Grade Potential because teaching and tutoring comes naturally for me and it is truly something I love to do. I am an extremely good student, I excel in all of my classes, and I strive to share my love of knowledge with fellow peers. Besides the academics and "knowin' my stuff," I am an extremely motivated and dedicated person. I always aim for the highest of standards, and I won't accept anything less. I have patience with students, and I understand that not all people learn in the same manner. It is important to approach teaching with an open mind, and I am prepared to tackle any situation with a positive attitude. I am reliable, organized, and punctual. I will never let and appointment or commitment fall through.

I would be a good tutor for Grade Potential because more than anything I love being a student and I know what it is that a student needs to be successful. I have always excelled in school, and aside from having a firm grasp on the subjects I would be tutoring, I also understand what explanations make sense and what ones are harder to grasp. I am a very reliable person and would take this job extremely seriously because I know how important it is to be confident in what you are learning in school.

I believe I would be an asset for Grade Potential as a hard-working, determined tutor. I am a great communicator that effectively presents my ideas through public speaking and writing because I focus on the details while reinforcing a general idea. Additionally, I am an accomplished person that is goal-oriented, as evident in my many academic and extra-curricular achievements. I recognize the importance of being reliable, as I would not have been able to achieve my goals without being organized, surpassing expectations, and fulfilling assigned commitments.

I would be a good tutor because I believe in working smarter not harder. Most students are smart but just need to be shown a trick or certain skill to achieve greatness. This is where I come in, I believe working smarter I can help students reach their full potential and earn the highest grade possible.

I was employed by LAUSD for summer 2010 to tutor Highschool Biology. I have also volunteered approximately 100 hours at Elwood Elementary in Santa Barbara. I quickly learned how to maintain the attention of 6-year-olds. I tutored struggling Math students and taught them the basics needed in order to stay on track with the curriculum. Each day they learned a new concept which slowly built their confidence in Math, this was extremely rewarding. In order to help them understand the material I used a wide array of educational tools, ranging from whiteboards to cubic toys.

I feel that Grade Potential is an excellent way to let me begin my teaching experience once more. I have always loved teaching and have been able to help out two struggling college students who were failing at the end of the quarter, to pass their calculus classes.I will be applying for a fellowship in New Orleans next school year and would like to have this tutoring position in order to improve my teaching skills.

The reason I am a great fit for Grade Potential is because I love to see students succeed. As someone who struggled in high school and college with math, I know how great it feels to experience that lightbulb moment, to understand a concept that had been difficult for me up until then. In all of the tutoring I've done, that's been something that has kept me motivated. To see students feel so down and out about their ability to write realize that they had something to say, and they could say it well (whether it took one tutoring session or many to reach that realization!) was a powerful moment, not just for me but for them. I know that feeling and I believe in the students with whom I work. Tutoring to me is a job, but it's also so much more than that -- it's a way to engage and help students feel like they are capable as well see them successful in everyday life.Another reason that I am a fabulous fit for Grade Potential is that I've got patience to the max and am not committed to only tutoring one way. As a writing tutor, I've learned that some students will benefit from me reading their papers, writing my questions/comments, and having them revise said paper. But not all students will learn like that! I am okay with doing whatever we need to in order to help the student (short of writing the paper for the student, of course -- that is NEVER acceptable!). I have walked around campus with a paper and the student during sessions, I've had students read paper out loud, I've had student read them backwards, and once, when I had a student who just felt like they had nothing to say, I told the student to just talk. I wrote down verbatim what she said and told her, "Look at all of this that you just said. It's your own words. I didn't add or take away. You have a LOT to say!" I recognize that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to tutoring, especially a subject like writing.

My greatest joy was having my students tell me how well they had done on a test. Obviously curriculum needs to be followed, but I've always tried to individualize lessons to make learning and understanding relevant to each student. I am very well organized and once assigned a task fully committed to completing it.I have tutored sophomore and junior high school students in Spanish. I also tutored a Hungarian student in general 3rd and 4th grade studies.
