Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I have always done well in school, but I have especially excelled at writing, math and geography. I am very interested in all of these subjects, which has helped me to completely delve into these classes and receive high grades. I am a very patient and coachable person and am constantly looking to improve my education. I believe these are very important attributes in being a good tutor because my patience will help move slowly through hard steps for struggling students and my love of education can show students that earning the grade is not the only important part of learning the material. I have experience working with students in Thailand as well as experience working with my severely ADHD brother who has always struggled with learning material at the same pace as his peers. I feel I would be a great tutor for Grade Potential because I have all the qualities necessary for teaching students at an array of different age levels and am really eager to share my knowledge.

I am flexible,both in my scheduling and in my approach to teaching. I realize that one way doesn't work for everyone. I am patient. I get it that it takes time to internalize concepts and then be able to get them back out and on to paper or into words. I am creative and knowledgeable. I realize how it feels to struggle with something and the feeling of accomplishment in attaining a goal.I have 1 year teaching first grade ESL, 2 years teaching 4th grade, and 18 years teaching severely handicapped students in grades first through eighth grades.

I would be a good tutor because aside from the necessary knowledge required, I am patient. I always made sure in my previous tutoring experience that the kids had a solid grasp of a subject before we moved on to a new subject. My one of the skills I developed that was especially suitable to math was to provide counter-examples so as to promote a logical understanding of the subject matter.I am a very reliable person. It is of the utmost importance to me that I am prepared for class. The night before I will set up all my things so as to ensure that I am doing everything possible to be prepared.

I would be a good tutor because I am patient when explaining things to people and if someone doesn't understand I am good at explaining things in different ways. I have always been the student that helps the others with homework or difficult problems in class. I like interacting with all different types of people and am extremely friendly. I am eager to get this job and be able to help others understand new things. I am a firm believer that EVERYONE can learn new things and be good at all subjects with effort and the right attitude.

I would be a good tutor for Grade Potential because I bring a set of skills that not every tutor has---I also was diagnosed with a learning disability when I entered college---I know from personal experience where learning breaks down and have the skills and knowledge necessary to help students "get it" so they can work towards higher grades and mastery of their classes. I am current on educational and brain research and am constantly working on adding to the "bag of tricks" I bring to any given student.I would also be an asset because I can get the student (and the family) to buy into a series of strategies that they normally wouldn't have thought of or tried. I am approachable--the studets I work with are not afraid to work with me or do not hesitate to work with me; I build rapport easily and they quickly become comfortable with the process we go through. They quickly learn I am not there to judge, prescribe, or preach. I am there to guide, suggest, support, and boune ideas off of, I act more like and academic coach and they usually appreciate that.

I have a solid basis of teaching experience, as listed in the above section, and have been able to develop and/or disregard different teaching techniques and ways to understand the student. My general strategy in teaching and tutoring is highly student-oriented, that is, I learn about who the student is and how they like to learn and can learn best, what interests them, and consequently how I can cater a learning objective to them based on their preferences and how I think their learning style can be best utilized. I consider my self to be adept at explaining things in a way that can be easily understood, whether they are abstract ideas or trying to comprehend and remember more concrete material. My career as a student has been successful, and as I stated earlier, I have a wide range of subject knowledge, which i find very helpful in understanding individual course matter as well. E.g. Physics helping understand calculus, sociology and history helping understand economics, etc. To be succinct, I have a solid knowledge base in many areas and am a skilled explainer and teacher of material, particularly due to student-oriented teaching techniques.

I have a long history when it comes to tutoring. I used to teach 6-16 year olds in Pony Club basic riding skills and horse management (I do so for fun as well, last week I helped run a weekend camp for 16 kids, ages 8-14), and in high school started tutoring students on the side for fun (math/biology). Since entering college I've helped individuals and small groups get ahead, mostly unpaid, because I think it's a worthwhile way to spend my time and it's fun (usually). I've also taught students in formal settings, both lab classes and recitations (3 hours of answering ANYTHING my students wanted to throw at me) and found the experience extremely rewarding, except for grading, which I consider a slow and painful way to waste my life. I believe that people who are willing to spend the extra time and effort that goes with hiring a tutor genuinely want to succeed, and anyone willing to put forth that effort has my wholehearted approval.I tend to work with students ages 8 or above, and have no trouble relating to most people above that age (I was raised with 8 siblings, that helps). As long as they're willing to put in the time, I'm willing to help them.

I would be a great tutor because there is a small part of me that wants to teach. There is no amount of money that can pay for that moment when a student "gets it". During undergrad I went to school to become a teacher but that was also around the time No Child Left Behind was passed and I did not like how that law effected the manner in which teacher taught. So I changed my degree and only work with students outside of class where to pressure of a national exam are absent and the goal is greater understanding of the subject matter.I will be reliable because I know the importance of a tutor. I will not make a commitment that I cannot keep. Before I take on this position I will have a clear understanding of what is asked of me and at what level. Before I agree I will make sure that requirement is not in conflict with other activities in my life. At the point that I agree, I am sure that I will be there.
