    About Los Gatos

The name Los Gatos originated in the early 1800s before the city was officially established. The area where the city resides used to be inhabited by the indigenous bobcats and cougars. Los Gatos tutors suspect that they must have been especially prolific in the area, as it was first named “La Rinconada de Los Gatos,” roughly translated “Cat’s Corner.”

The city has a long history, with its primary source of income varying throughout the years. Initially it was built up around “Forbes Mill,” a flour-mill built by James Alexander Forbes in the 1860s. The town was at a time important within the logging industry, and then evolved, a trend seen at the time, into a farming community well known for its high quality fruits. Demand for California grown ‘exotic’ fruits like apricots and prunes increased, and there were very few regions within the U.S that have a climate comparable to successfully grow these crops, so Los Gatos capitalized on the growing demand, and in so doing became a prosperous agricultural town. Los Gatos also went through a mini oil boom around the turn of the twentieth century. There were twenty oil wells drilled, after oil was struck in the city vicinity. However not enough oil was found for commercial production and the oil they did extract supplemented local oil use as road tar, or fuel for those living in the community.

The sheer beauty and pleasant climate made Los Gatos from the get-go a highly desirable neighborhood to reside in. In the early 1900s Los Gatos saw an influx of “creative types”; artists, writers, actors and musicians were drawn to the area and it became a hive of creative activity. Naturally, Los Gatos tutors often reference the fact that John Steinbeck wrote the “Grapes of Wrath” here, and that conductor and violinist Yehudi Menuhin, widely considered to be a master violinist and certainly one of the best of the twentieth century, spent his formative years as a boy growing up here in Los Gatos.

Nowadays Los Gatos is as popular a neighborhood as it has ever been and (according to Los Gatos tutors,) due to its ‘chameleon’ like ability is now one of the wealthiest cities in America. It now houses “Netflix’s” headquarters, which comfortably employs a great number of local residents. Netflix was originally a service that evolved from the traditional video stores, allowing customers to have movies on DVD mailed directly to their homes. This new convenient method of renting movies was originally incredibly popular and Netflix grew exponentially in its early years. To keep up with competition and a shift in how customers watched movies, Netflix began streaming movies like its competitors and managed to regain its footing in the business of providing a movie delivery service. In its new form Netflix directly streams media via apps included on smart televisions or on digital media player set-top boxes.
