    About San Martin

San Martin has its very own volunteer run aviation museum named “Wings Of History.” It is a nonprofit organization run on monetary donations from the community with extra monies being raised from fundraising events and donations of goods or services from local businesses.

“Wings Of History” is an incredibly popular destination for tutors in San Martin who take their classes there to examine the exhibits on display, and to learn from the experts there from their wealth of historical knowledge in the aviation industry. On site there are two aircraft hangars to explore. For would be aviation enthusiasts the first hangar is fascinating, it consists of antique aircraft parts, including propeller engines so young minds can see the bones of how the original airplanes were constructed as well as be better equipped to understand the science behind their conception. They also have several aircraft models so that visitors can see the varying designs of the first models that were built.

Also housed within this first hangar is a non-flying replica of the Wright Brothers’ original “Flyer I” or “1903 Flyer,” which aircraft enthusiasts will know, was the very first successful aircraft to fly. It was actually flown four times in total on December 17th 1903. (The actual aircraft is on exhibit to the public at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.) What is monumental about this flight is that it was the first flight that had a pilot on board, and the aircrafts weight was “heavier-than-air”. Following on from this extraordinary feat piloted aircraft was the new wave in the aviation industry. From this point it became possible to create and develop passenger aircraft, which is how we travel internationally today.

In the second hangar visitors will find many complete aircraft, many of which the “Wings Of History” team actually take out and fly. A car-helicopter was donated to the museum and provides interest to many of the visitors, as do the growing collection of flight instruments that are on display in this second hangar. The museum sends members quarterly updates or newsletters with information about ways in which its members can become better involved in their activities. It also lists upcoming events and fundraisers and gives thanks to those who have been integral in keeping the “Wings Of History Museum” up and running. They take pride and effort in memorializing pillars of the local Aviation Community. Some of those who were born at the time when aviation was beginning to ‘take off’ and who were alive for the meteoric advancements in aviation technology are now in their eighties and nineties, or older. The “Wings Of History” Museum becomes the venue for celebrations of these lives, and is a great place to gather together surrounded by memories. They often organize flyovers as part of the occasion and encourage guests to donate to the Museum in lieu of spending money on floral arrangements.
