I chose a career in education because I am able to see potential in others, many times before they see it themselves. Since I too struggled in some subjects, I know what it means to feel frustrated while learning. I promise to always be patient, compassionate, and break down tough concepts into comprehensible chunks so that your new knowledge will be cemented in long-term memory.

As a retired teacher with a bit of time on my hands I have found that I have missed working one-on-one with children. I would like to make a difference in the life and education of children who need the extra help. I can communicate with both children and parents in Spanish if the need is there.

I care about tutoring because it has done wonders for me - a good grade is so often a question of teaching. Most people can learn just about anything. I think it is a myth that some people 'can't do math'. I thought I couldn't, but between a couple of good professors - and a tutoring center when my professor unfortunately wasn't up to par - I can do math.The the lines between Freud, Pavlov, and PET scans can seem anything in between fuzzy and uninteresting if they only need to link the student's GE with their major. I think everyone has an angle of interest. This is important, because if something is made interesting, the student will learn and retain more easily.

I have 20 plus years of experiences as a teacher/tutor especially in the area of computer science. My strength is in mathematics and I love to share that with my students. I also can teach American Sign Language since that is my secondary language and I use that to teach my deaf and hard of hearing students. I myself am deaf but I can speak very well and can work with anyone.

I have a passion for teaching. I am going to credential to be an elementary school teacher in the Fall and I can't wait to get started. I love kids and they seem to really enjoy me. The education process enthralls me and I love helping people succeed. With the recent budget cuts, I am concerned about what is happening to our schools, especially in the Paso Robles area where I happen to live. I have six grand-children who are affected by the new school week (3 days in class and 4 days off.) This is just a sample of what may be going on in the entire country. I heard that one third of America cannot read.Since I have been teaching people how to quit smoking -- in state prisons, county jails, transitional housing, alternative schools, hospitals, public high schools and colleges, group and individual settings -- I discovered that I was most successful in reaching the discouraged, especially on a one-on-one basis. Maybe it is due to individualized attention being given to the student or maybe it is a calling -- perhaps both -- but I enjoy being part of making a difference.In 2007 I was hired by the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) for the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) at the California Men's Colony to set up a program to provide educational services to minimum security inmates who couldn't read or write. I also enrolled thirty students in a distant learning college so they could earn their AA degree. I oversaw twelve different subjects per semester. Since I was also their proctor, I tutored these students until graduation. Unfortunately, this was yet another program affected by state budget cuts.As you can see, my tutoring experience has led me in non-traditional areas. Nevertheless, needs were met under the cracks where some have fallen.I am glad you recognized your personal need for a tutor, sought it and found it.
