The desire to teach runs in my family. My grandmother and mother were both teachers, and my older sister has her masters degree in child psychology/development from Berkeley. I've always valued being "book smart," and I'm constantly striving to gain knowledge of any kind. It's important to me see kids thrive in school, and I believe that one-on-one tutoring is such a great way to make sure that happens. I love to see a an increase in self-esteem and motivation when they master a new skill, sound out a difficult word on their own, or raise their grade level.I've volunteered with ReadingPartners.Org for three years - two years at Washington Elementary in Pasadena, and 1 year at Learning Without Limits in Oakland.

First, I enjoy tutoring and helping others to learn things to their own satisfaction. There is nothing like seeing someone's sense of pride and accomplishment when they first understand something that had previously seemed impossible. I feed off this reaction, and it's why I enjoy tutoring.A little about myself - I've always enjoyed school, but about a year ago, something really clicked. Since then, I've gotten all A's in all of my classes, and I'm feeling really good about graduating from UCSB this Spring. I've taken courses in psychology on how learning and memory function best, and I feel highly qualified to tutor in the courses I've listed on this application.When I tutor, I follow a student-based strategy. Instead of tutoring rote memorization, I prefer to teach general strategies for attacking problems. Once these strategies are learned, they provide a framework for learning the material.Importantly, this works very well for improving test scores immediately. I teach students to see the whole picture, and use that insight to find their way to correct answers.Why I'm reliable: 1. I have a Toyota (very reliable). 2. During my time at UCSB I've honed my time management skills. 3. I am eager to please and make good impressions. 4. I held a job as a full-time lifeguard at a summer camp in Los Angeles. I had to get up early, commute 1 hour in LA traffic, and never once showed up late for work.Finally, I've conducted research with field-leading professors during my college career. I've mastered courses, and know what it takes to master course material. I'm more than happy to share my strategies with people who are interested in doing well from the 7th grade through college.

From January to August 2011, I taught English at a Chilean public school in Antofagasta, Chile. Upon arrival in Chile, I did not fully know the language, nor had I had any experience teaching English as a foreign language. Through my experiences in Chile, I learned how to adjust to new situations and requirements. I also developed good communication skills in both English and Spanish, as well as organizational, and teaching skills, through teaching and leading an after school English Club activity. Furthermore, I learned how to plan lessons and activities that would be both fun and educational. My experience in Chile required me to learn how to teach and communicate clearly in both Spanish and English and to people who were trying to learn a new language. Therefore, I know I am extremely capable of adjusting to new circumstances and learning new skills to complete my job.I believe that I am well qualified for this position because of my experiences in Chile, as well as in my undergraduate and graduate education. I was a math tutor in high school and as an undergraduate I tutored math, physics and anatomy.

Not only am I confident in my abilities, but I truly enjoy the subject matter at any level. I love seeing the "ah-ha!" moment when the person I am tutoring understands what they were having trouble with. It's hard when a student is too caught up with the logistics of the work and does not enjoy the story behind what they are reading. While I want to make sure students get an A+ on their test, I also want them to have an adventure with their reading that will make them want to come back to it again and again.As for reliability, while searching for a part time job I have volunteered for an independent bookstore in Camarillo. I take volunteering very seriously and treat it as my job; I make sure I am always on time and ready to get to work right away. I have volunteered there for nine months and always try to make the best impression by being as professional as possible.

I have great communication skills, I am a straight A student, I have experience with children and tutoring, and I have taken many classes in "Study Skills" etc. I expect results, but always use positive reinforcement rather than negative reinforcement. I am very dedicated to the success of my students and I am very creative when it comes to creating memory games, helpful activities, and daily routines to help ensure my students accomplish their goals.

I would be a good tutor for Grade Potential because of all the experience I have had; it has helped me to learn many different approaches to teaching students that I would have not thought of before. I am also very good with working with kids. The tutoring jobs I have had in the past have also taught me how to balance the tutoring session well, so as to keep the student's interest. Lastly, I am very patient, and never get frustrated with or give up on the student when they are having trouble understanding something.

I would be a great tutor for Grade Potential because I am not the tutor that is wanting to just get paid. I enjoy helping people figure things out and watch them grow on their studies. I am a person that cares much about the success of others as much as myself. I am a very reliable person that rarely flakes out on people unless of emergency situations. Not only do I respect other people, but I have the mental capability to provide good instruction to the ones I am tutoring. I am very proficient in math subjects and have the ability to explain them well. Overall, I feel like being a tutor is the job for me because I have the main characteristics of a tutor: care, knowledge, and responsibility.

I have outstanding communication skills, and have the ability to be empathetic with any age group. My experience includes one-on-one as well as large classroom settings. As for my reliability, I have outstanding references, as well as the fact that anyone who has taught or tutored cannot survive if they are not punctual. I believe that to be most effective, engaging my students and using role-playing, visualization and lots of back-and-forth question/answer sessions is the way to proceed, and experience has shown this observation to be accurate.
