Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

For about three years, I was a one-on-one Instructional Aide for students with severe and mild autism. In this setting, I was able to assess students' learning habits and make appropriate accommodations to the instructional methods and required workload. I was also able to practice my own tutoring skills since much of the time consisted of one-on-one assistance with elementary level subjects.Currently, I am finishing my Student Teaching at Brandon Elementary School in Goleta where I work in a Special Day Class for 4h, 5th, and 6th graders. My classroom consists of 16 students with various learning disabilities and language processing issues. In order to optimize the learning of all my students, there are various levels of small-groups in the classroom. I am able to provide instruction for my students at a small teacher-student ratio.In the afternoons, I tutor a small group of students. This group strictly works on reading comprehension and fluency. We work with a reading program called Project Read, which focuses on teaching children the various decoding rules in the English language such as consonant blends and other vowel/syllable rules.

I am one of the most reliable, optimistic, friendly, hard-working teachers you will meet! I love people, and my passion is seeing kids learn, grow and excel. I am extremely trustworthy and I love working with others and solving problems together. I "know my stuff" for tutoring any subject K-6 and I am interested in, and love teaching, all subjects to kids. I also love finding what motivates individual students, and how to best adapt methods and activities to best suit their learning needs. I love watching that light bulb go off over their head! I have not missed one day of school this year due to illness, and only 2.5 days for personal reasons all year long. I have never been late to a job, and have held a dozen or so jobs in various fields, always receiving a positive, enthusiastic recommendation and reference from each employer.

In college I took on many positions on campus including Director of Scholarship for my Sorority. On a regular basis I was in charge of coordinating and hosting and tutoring/study hours weekly for my sisters. I was also responsible for providing study plans for girls who were not making GPA requirements. On the regular I was responsible for motivating all sisters to reach their highest potential with rewards of recognition on a job well done. I came up with a lot of fun simple prizes to motivate girls to do well and I feel a lot of me ideas can also work with my potential students.

I strongly believe in teaching effectively to students and being a positive mentor. As a teacher and tutor I especially want students to know that the learning process can be a fun and positive experience. I have tutored and taught students at many different levels (e.g. middle school, high school and college) in science and math and therefore have a lot of experience with the subjects. In addition to knowing the subject information, I enjoy teaching and finding out the learning style that works best with each student.Although I hold several positions (e.g. part-time lecturer and program coordinator), my schedule is pretty set (8am-4pm) each day and does allow flexibility in the late afternoon and evening to tutor. I am a very reliable person and do not make commitments that I cannot fulfill.

I have had many experiences working with elementary-high school age students. I have lead small groups for high school and jr. high girls, taught classes at church on a regular basis for elementary age students, and have lead a classroom of preschool students for a week-long summer camp. I work well with kids and also with students my own age. I have regularly been involved in students lives and love to see them grow and mature! Also, I have consistently been working for the past two years and have always been faithful to show up on time and get my work finished properly. As a college student and employee, I have also developed exceptional communication skills which allows me to effectively communicate with others.

I'm an outgoing person. I've always been good at connecting with people, especially in an educational context. I love to help people understand things. I love talking specifics and hammering out details. I am well organized and good with planning and punctuality. Teaching is something I am good at, and I've always found it very rewarding.I have a good deal of tutoring experience. I began working for Butte County Office of Education as a K-8 tutor in 2002. I continued working there as a high school tutor until I graduated high school in 2005. I then became a substitute after school program instructor and continued working for BCOE for another year. In 2011 I became a full time after school program instructor for BCOE, tutoring K-8 students in all subjects.

I enjoy working with students one-on-one because I believe this allows me not only tutor but also mentor. On-one-one tutoring also allows for the student to gain a greater understanding of the material and build a stronger relationship with the tutor. When I tutor students my goal is to teach them the material without giving them the answers but guiding them through the process of finding how to deal with a problem. My other goal is to provide them with the opportunity to build the confidence to reach their full potential. I am a reliable person and I have proven this in my previous jobs, internships, and my own personal endeavors. I take any work I do with students extremely seriously because I know it is in the best interest of the student. I would demonstrate this as a tutor for Grade Potential as I did with my other job positions in the past.

I like to help students to engage in the subject matter through figures, drawings and demonstrations with real-life examples. Taking physics as an example, when I try to explain a concept, I do my best to show the student a day-to-day life example that applies to the concept. I also draw figures and use hand gestures to demonstrate a concept, so that the student does not simply memorize the formulas, but has a real understanding of the subject.Patience is another neccessary part in learning, and I am very patient with students to ensure that they fully learned the material and well prepared for the exam.I am a very reliable person and have no problem keeping up with appointments and fulfilling the commitments.
