Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I have worked with children for years in mentoring programs, youth ministry, tutoring, coaching, but in the US and abroad. I am around 40 years old and am completely reliable. I am in between professional positions currently, and would love to work as a tutor in the interim.I have tutored previously in most math subjects, accounting and finance, computer skills classes, technical writing. Would be comfortable tutoring in English and history as well. I have worked with children for years in mentoring programs, youth ministry, tutoring, coaching, but in the US and abroad. I am around 40 years old and am completely reliable. I was an Assistant Director of Undergraduate Advising during grad school, and advised and counseled over 200 students during that time.

I work well with students. I believe mutual respect leads to an open and comfortable relationship. This makes it possible for students take risks in their learning, resulting in comprehension. I have two school aged children which I have tutored throughout their school experience. Through may training at CSUCI, I recieved extensive review and instruction in literacy, writing, math and science.Yes, I launched two homework clubs for a social services agency at which I was employed. In doing so, I did a lot of tutoring for students at Cesar Chavez and Driffill Elementary schools in Oxnard. I loved this work and this is what led to me to become a teacher.

I understand that reliability and dependability are crucial to a student's learning and progress. The tutor/teacher sets an example. If the teacher is not present and/nor taking education seriously, neither will the student. I have received much training on style and presentation of curriculum through my experience as a tutor. I have found that the most effective way to teach a new subject to a student is to first model a successful strategy. Second, is to allow them to do it themselves. When they are "doing it themselves", it is important to ask open ended questions, such as "What type of method should we use here, multiplication or addition?”, "How do we get rid of that exponent?”, "How can we get X by itself?”. As tempting as it is to do the work for them sometimes, open-ended questions really allow a student to learn in a way that is specific to their learning needs.

I feel I would be a great tutor because I am dedicated to my students, and patient. I am punctual, detail oriented, and strive for greatness. I relate well to others and follow-through on assignments given but I also keep my own standards and goals for myself. I have a passion for school and want everyone to succeed and feel good about subjects they did not think they could accomplish.In college I was a leader in a program that tutored and mentored first-generation college students. Through that experience I found that I really enjoyed helping others and being there to ensure their success. I have tutored family members, and friend's kids. I also train employees at my current job which allows me to mentor them for success at work.

I have tutored for many years. I started tutoring grades k-6 in middle school through our school program called "lend a hand". I also tutored throughout high school and in college. I am now tutoring through a program called "school on wheels" which is a non-profit organization who tutors homeless children. I have always enjoyed helping others and tutoring is one of the most rewarding acts I have found. I am a very reliable person. I have held management positions for the past 6 years so I know the importance of attendance and punctuality.

I feel that I am responsible and patient, two very valuable attributes in tutoring. I can gauge at what level the student is fully understanding the subject and can create analogies that are very helpful in the conceptual issues dealt with in Mathematics. Additionally I think that I have naturally clicked with many of my past students, as I don't necessarily fill the generic description of a math major, which can commonly detract many students from the actual learning process. I have no doubt in my abilities within mathematics and concern myself solely with the ability of the student to absorb the material, which I believe you will see I am capable of doing efficiently and creatively.

I have a very wide background in terms of education, especially math and science. I have been student teaching since August, in a 6th grade classroom in the fall and now in a Kindergarten classroom. Both of these experiences have been in Goleta, so I am aware of local standards and curriculum. I am very reliable, as I need to be as a responsible student teaching who is expected to arrive at school at or before 7:45 every morning and stay until 3:30 either grading student work or prepping for future lessons. I have also built a great work ethic as I work from 7:30 until 3:30 and then attend classes at UCSB from 4:00 - 7:00. As the school year is winding down, I am becoming more available in the evenings, though.

I was tutored in the french language privately for 6 years once a week starting in 8th grade. I think I was able to learn from that experience myself. I try to walk away with the most I can from any circumstance. I am very patient and I believe I am very good at explaining what I know. I am eager to share my knowledge with others and I love to teach. French is one of my passions and I jump at any chance I can to help others with the language. I plan to study abroad with all of the work I have put into my french studies and I hope that I can influence others to do just as many great things with the language.At the boys and girls club I learned how to work with children much younger than me. I loved every minute of it. I liked working with the students in the library because they seemed to be so focused at such a young age on the simplest of topics. My grades are very important to me, and I made sure that theirs were important to them too. I worked with each student until each assignment was 100 percent correct and finished.I am the department assistant for the French Languages and Cultures department at my university. This includes tutoring any student at Cal Lutheran for 4 hours out of the week. I am also a private french tutor for several students from high schools around the area.I also volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club where I helped elementary school students with homework after school.
