Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I am a very outgoing person, and can get along with nearly everyone. I have been told I have an uncanny ability to think/create alternate ways to teach something to someone; by finding ways to relate the subject to something they have previous knowledge in, or to something they are more interested in. I have my own transportation, and consider a commitment to something very important. If I say i will do something, consider it done.

With six years teaching experience, I have always loved tutoring. With the one-on-one format, it can be very rewarding to see the progress that the student makes with your assistance. In the subjects that I am passionate about, such as History and Social Studies, I am able to make the lessons and assignments exciting. In areas that are not my natural forte, I have a knack for teaching new concepts in a way that is easy for students to understand, who normally do not not pick up Mathematics very easily. Working in religious education and ministry for the past 15 years has equipped me with a talent to make a valuable connection with students as well as an ability to work with parents. I am currently working in a part-time position that affords me plenty of time and flexibility to work with families in tutoring.

Although I have no past tutoring experience, I love teaching and am extremely outgoing and enthusiastic when it comes to helping people achieve their goals. For the past few summers I have worked as a sailing instructor at a summer camp, teaching kids how to sail. I believe I could apply my teaching methods as a sailing coach to tutoring at Grade Potential, because both jobs involve a high level of planning, flexibility and enthusiasm. Both involve being a role model for younger students, which I have a great depth of experience in. I have excellent time management skills, being a Landscape Architecture major requires the highest level of organization and when I make a commitment, I will fulfill it to the highest level. I am punctual, and will always be on time, if not early.

I think I would be an excellent tutor, not only because of my ample knowledge of Mathematics and general sciences, but also because I feel I am very personable with other people especially younger kids. I'm able to connect well with children, I think because I'm a good listener and I don't mind giving children attention, which is what I think they need more of these days. I know kids get neglected and I feel being tutored gives them some sort of meaning for why they need to learn all this information they get in school. I think some children may have lost the sense of what school really means and how their education early on can affect how they will turn out as a human being. This is why I would take this job seriously when I'm with a client and really care about them and help them get through their problems. I really enjoy helping people, it makes me feel good so I think this job would be fun. I also am very reliable. I attend college at various times Monday through Friday, but I do not have any other obligations at this time. This would be my only other job so I would just schedule people outside of my class time and I would be able to meet people when we set the appointment. I also drive a newer car and it gets good gas mileage so driving to different parts of the county would not be a problem.

I am able to explain in a clear manner. I learn quickly and on-the-spot, so if I need refreshers before any scheduled tutoring, it wouldn't be a problem. I absolutely love teaching people anything I can, and it brings me joy to be able to let others understand what they may not have comprehended before. This is something I have wanted to do for a long time.

I love teaching, I have a wide variety of teaching experience- I have taught workshops on environmental policy, to rainwater design, to youth food justice workshops. I have presented at conferences all over this country and abroad. I had the amazing opportunity to study at one of the country's finest liberal arts schools that privileged me with excellent communication and critical thinking skills. There is no other profession I enjoy more than helping students come to terms with a subject or problem and helping them develop their own tools to reason and comprehend subjects as they move on.I have excellent references and substantial experience working. I am a reliable working and would love to join a team where my skills were valued.

Teaching is something that comes very naturally to me. I gravitated to the classroom when my children entered school and was always in some mode of teaching or training from then on.I have an unique ability to find where a student's block in learning is coming from. I have immense patience and feel every child has tremendous intelligence. My style is to allow the student to do the work and, when he/she gets stuck, we discover what part is either missing in the knowledge sequence or is confusing. then, we move on. Students feel very comfortable making mistakes while I tutor as I believe mistakes are a normal part of learning.I believe in making learning super fun and we laugh a lot in learning sessions. If we can laugh at mistakes, we can all learn easier. :)I have always been self-employed and now that I'm semi-retired I would like to work in some kind of educational job. Being self-employed most of my adult life required extreme reliability. As a Chiropractor I had patients that needed reliable treatment. Running an ISP, with thousands of customers, demanded utmost reliability of the owner to make sure the customer's connection was always dependable. 15 years in that business only happens when the ISP is reliable. :)

I have a really great ability to simplify problems that students have. I can explain them in such a way that solutions are easily understandable, and instead of just giving the student the answer, I prefer guiding them to it so they can solve the problem on their own in the future. In high school, I spent the majority of my time as a public speaker, so I am well aware of how to articulate my thoughts in a clear and concise manner. Moreover, I understand the meaning of commitment and am looking for another organization I can dedicate my time to.
