Parma Heights is a small suburban city in northern region of the great state of Ohio, located west of the big city of Cleveland. There’s a lot more to Parma Heights than just its suburban status to Cleveland; Parma Heights has an interesting and unique history all its own, and has earned its place in American history. It has seen a lot of change during the eighteen and nineteenth centuries, but one thing remains consistent, and that is the love that the families that live in Parma Heights have for this little city.
Before Parma Heights became the city it is today, it went through a lot of change. Originally named the settlement of Greenbriar, Parma Heights was purchased by a land company. Eventually, a few dozen families moved to this area, and one of the families saw the land and thought that the name “Parma” suited it better, as it is such a beautiful piece of land and brought back memories of beautiful Parma, Italy. That is how Parma Heights got its name!
Parma Heights was a primarily rural and agricultural town for a long time, almost all the way through the 1800s. The population stayed relatively small, and during the Civil War, many local families lost family members during some of the worst battles, and as a result, the population saw a significant decrease, as did much of the country.
There are many local historical buildings, structures, and homes here in Parma Heights, though few remain in their original condition. One such historical relic is the Henninger House, which is still standing to this day. Constructed in the mid 1800s, this house is made primarily of stone. One interesting fact about the history of the Henninger House is that it was constructed to be at one of the high points in the entire county. For this reason, those inside the house could have visibility for miles.
