Maple Heights is a city in Ohio, that was named for the abundance of maple trees that ran throughout the area. One point of interest in Maple Heights is the Slovenian National Home. Not long after Maple Heights was established, a large population of Slovenes and people of Slovenian descent moved to the Maple Heights area. Slovenia is a country in central Europe bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary, Croatia, and the Adriatic Sea. In 1926, Maple Heights resident, Anton Pelko, presented the idea of building a National Slovenian Home in town. The Maple Heights community was in favor of the idea; and in 1928, the state of Ohio presented the Slovenian population of Maple Heights, a corporation charter called the, “Slovenian National Home of Maple Heights, Ohio.”
The building was originally intended to be used by the Slovenian population for cultural events and meetings; with education programs, social gatherings and more. But the Maple Heights community as a whole, was able to benefit from the new facilities. It became a popular venue for baby showers, bridal showers, weddings, dances, banquets, receptions, concerts, and functions of all kinds. The building became so popular that in 1941, they built on an addition. In 1962, the building was again expanded and remodeled in attempts to accommodate all the needs of the growing community. They even added air conditioning. Starting in the late 80’s, the building has slowly continued to improve with repairs and restorations, helping it continue the tradition of being the community gathering place.
One special feature of the Slovenian National Home is the Gaspari curtain. The Gaspari curtain is an incredible art piece that is proudly displayed in the main hall of the building. It is a reproduction of Maksim Gaspari’s, “Mother Slovenia,” painting. The painting includes several prominent Slovenes, including poet, France Preseren and writer, Ivan Cankar. The Slovenian National Home of Maple Heights, Ohio has grown to become the largest Slovenian Home in the U.S. and attracts Slovenes from all over the world. Over the last century, the home has housed countless celebrations, gatherings, and functions that have helped promote the culture and heritage of the Slovene people, and the community of Maple Heights. It could tutor other venues in promoting cultural events, and supporting the local community.
