    About Miramar

Despite the fact it’s actually a few miles from the beach and the Atlantic Ocean, founder A.L. Mailman gave the land he purchased in 1953 the name Miramar. In Spanish, the word “mira” means look and the word “mar” translates to sea, thus “Look to the sea” or “Sea View.” Mailman named it after a small city near Havana where he had a summer home. Today a suburb of the larger metropolitan area, Miramar is a modern community only miles from bustling Miami and the beaches of Fort Lauderdale on its eastern edges. To the west are the sawgrass marshes and islands of the Everglades. A Miramar tutor will certainly put you ahead of the academic curve so you can enjoy the urban excitement of Miami as well as the natural beauty of Florida’s wild wetlands.

While Miramar is mostly a residential area it does have several activities and attractions. Miramar Regional Park offers the amenities of a public park including picnic areas, playgrounds, pavilions, athletic fields and basketball courts. The park also features a lake and aquatic complex. At 157 acres, Miramar Pineland Park includes a regional park with playgrounds and fields, a natural area where visitors may catch a glimpse of wildlife such as various reptiles, birds and butterflies. The land where Pineland Park currently sits was once part of the Everglades Sugar and Land Company in the first part of the twentieth century. For more nature, Snake Warrior’s Island Natural Area is 53 acres of flora and fauna and is part of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail.

To the east there are a wealth of activities available in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale area. For art lovers, the Pérez Art Museum Miami has been collecting art since 1996 with a focus on twentieth century artists such as Frank Stella and Diego Rivera. Exhibitions include painting, photography, sculpture and other mediums. The museum also sponsors the annual Miami Art Walk, a walking tour of artworks installed throughout the Miami community. For foodies, the Little Havana Food and Walking Tour samples the cultural cuisine of Cuba. The tour also presents live entertainment and a cigar rolling demonstration. The Fort Lauderdale Air Show features high speed jets from both the U.S. and Canadian air forces. In May, West Palm Beach comes alive with “Sunfest,” a five-day arts and music festival. Also in May, “Fleet Week” draws upwards of 12,000 visitors to Fort Lauderdale and Port Everglades where they tour active Navy and Coast Guard ships for free.

To the west of Miramar are the massive wetlands known as the Everglades. The Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area is 670,000 acres of vast wild lands and marshes. Access to the area is limited and the interior can only be reached by air boat. Hunting, fishing and air boating are available to visitors. Animals native to the Everglades include alligators, crocodiles, a variety of other reptiles, mammals such as rabbits and wild cats, manatees and numerous different bird species. The best time to view wildlife in the Everglades is between December and April.
