Isla Vista, California, is an unincorporated community and is home, predominantly, to college students attending the University of California, Santa Barbara. Due to its high volume of young residents, Isla Vista is unique in its beach culture and energetic vibe, and it’s not uncommon to see students enjoying the outdoors via sunbathing, surfing, playing soccer, or tossing a Frisbee in an attempt to take a much needed break from their academic pursuits. Since it is a college town, coffee shops and popular hang out spots are often open well into the wee hours of the night thanks to its predominantly young population, with many staying open 24 hours around exam time. The easy-going attitude of the area can be seen largely in the dominant mode of transportation: bicycles and skateboards. Since most people are only a few (most likely barefoot) steps away from the beach, passersby will see many a wet-suit clad youth walking around with a surfboard under their arm.

The area’s vibe is youthful and energetic, so it comes as no surprise that it Isla Vista is well known for its off-the-charts Halloween celebrations, Earth Day and Chilla Vista festivals, bike races, and the All Sorority Volleyball Tournament. All of these celebrations feature good food, large crowds, and great music.

Since around the 1980s, in fact, Isla Vista has been a starting off point for many local bands, with several using the Seville Road storage garages as rehearsal space. Some of the more notable performers that have gone to find some fame are Animal Liberation Orchestra, Jack Johnson, Steve Aoki, Lagwagon, Thriving Ivory, Rebelution, and Ugly Kid Joe. Unfortunately, the storage garages were demolished in 2012 to make room for luxury student housing, which is something Isla Vista desperately needs.

The community of Isla Vista has seen some difficult times, but overall, the area’s residents maintain an upbeat, positive vibe that makes Isla Vista a quaint and happy college town.
