Buellton Tutors Come To You

A small town set in the Santa Ynez Valley, Buellton was named from R.T. Buell, the owner of the Rancho San Carlos de Jonata Mexican land grant. The city’s strategic location has earned its title as the Gateway to the Santa Ynez valley, and because Buellton is so judiciously positioned it attracts many visitors. These roadside visitors love stopping in the area not only because of its prime location on Highway 101 but also thanks to the ever popular—among tourists and locals alike—Pea Soup Andersen’s.

Pea Soup Andersen’s has a long-standing history in Buellton, which makes the restaurant an intrinsic fiber of the community. Originally founded in 1924 by Anton and Juliette Andersen— immigrants hailing from Denmark and France, respectively—the restaurant was called Andersen’s Electric Cafe: its namesake hailing from their prized electric stove.

Anton Andersen’s professional experience working in world-class establishments across Europe and in New York City was taxing, and he tired of the grind of gourmet cooking, catering and working in city hotels, so he and his wife, Juliette moved to Buellton. They opened their restaurant, which quickly became popular amongst people traveling between Los Angeles and San Francisco—primarily tourists, salesmen, and truck drivers. The service and simple fare were both top notch, but the hospitable environment—and Anton’s flawless talent for remembering faces and names quickly—made their restaurant a popular stop. Once they added Juliette’s pea soup to the menu and constructed a hotel and dining room on the property, the restaurant quickly changed from a quick-stop to a must-stop.

In the 1930s, Anton and Juliette’s son, Robert entered the business and changed the name of the restaurant to Pea Soup Andersen’s; he’s also the visionary behind the restaurant’s mascots Hap-pea and Pea-wee, as well as the construction of the now-infamous billboards scattered throughout California. After around thirty years in the family business, Robert decided he was ready to retire, so he sold Pea Soup Andersen’s to Vince Evans. Just as Buellton tutors can help students thrive in the classroom, Pea Soup Andersen’s thrived under Evans’ deft helm.

Vince Evans, like Robert Andersen, was very forward thinking, and he added many delights to the restaurant’s grounds. Not to mention, the restaurant was purchasing 50 tons of peas every year. Business was good. However, after the Evans family untimely demise, the restaurant would go through several rounds of ownership; in 1999, Pea Soup Andersen’s would find a new owner in longtime fan of the restaurant, Milt Guggia.

Pea Soup Andersen’s continues to draw in travelers and tourists with dreams of delicious split pea soup, of which the restaurant is estimated to sell 500-600 gallons a day. Just as peas are the most important ingredient in pea soup, Pea Soup Andersen’s is a vital ingredient in the city of Buellton, and Buellton tutoring can prepare students to be as successful in the classroom as Pea Soup Andersen’s is in the business community.
