Hopewell is a beautiful, friendly, small city located within the metropolitan area of Richmond in the heart of the great state of Virginia. With a very rich and unique history, Hopewell is loved by residents and tourists alike. The gorgeous scenery and great local schools are all attractive features of Hopewell.
One interesting fact about Hopewell is that it is the oldest continuously inhabited town in the entire country. If Jamestown was still inhabited, the title would go to Jamestown, but since Jamestown is no longer a city, the title goes to Hopewell. The city of Hopewell was initially established because of its location. Slightly higher than the surrounding area of Virginia, Hopewell provided a great vantage point to surrounding areas, and overlooked nearby rivers. This was important back in the 1600s, and provided an easy way to defend the city of Hopewell from any intruders that might be coming down the river.
Part of the city that is now contained within Hopewell was an area that was once referred to as City Point. City Point was a historically significant place because this is where General Grant built his headquarters during the Civil War in the mid 1800s.
It wasn’t until the middle of the 1900s that Hopewell began to experience a noticeable change — urbanization. Old parts of town began to renovate and attract new businesses to the area, with the idea of reviving the struggling local economy. Because Hopewell’s location within the metropolis of Richmond, many residents would go to the big city for any of their shopping needs. Local Hopewell residents made a big effort to create more business within their own town to help revive the local downtown area.
Besides having large residential areas, Hopewell is also known for a number of very large industrial plants, including a Honeywell plant, Evonik Industry plant, and a large paper mill. Because of these large plants, Hopewell has been forced to deal with a number of concerning environmental issues, as each of the plants works with harmful chemicals and creates a fair amount of pollution. Several large plants have been closed for this reason, and it has caused many local Hopewell citizens to lose their jobs. This loss of local jobs has created new initiatives here in Hopewell to bring in new, environmentally friendly industries to create new jobs for Hopewell residents.
Here in Hopewell, there are three public elementary schools, one public middle school, and one public high school. The Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Arts and Technology is a highly rated local charter school that accepts high school age students and provides a great local opportunity for students interested in the arts and technology fields. For students of any grade level, local Hopewell tutors are available. These local tutors can work with students one-on-one in creating better habits and developing study skills to help them achieve their educational goals.
