    About Henderson

One of the top five suburbs in the Las Vegas metropolitan area, Henderson, Nevada didn’t get its start until 1941, the same year the U.S. entered World War II, when it began to produce magnesium for the war effort. Basic Magnesium Inc. produced millions of tons of magnesium ingots, used to strengthen aluminum in aircraft and ammunition. Called the “wonder metal” the production of magnesium brought thousands of workers to Henderson, named after Nevada Senator Charles B. Henderson, which is about 16 miles southeast of Las Vegas. Groundbreaking for Henderson’s city hall began in 1963 and with the passage of the Henderson Land Bill by Congress the size of the city doubled. Henderson has grown and expanded ever since so that now it is the second largest city in Nevada at well over 200,000 residents.

Henderson benefits from a variety of amenities within its city limits and next door in sprawling Las Vegas. A Henderson tutor can keep you ahead of the academic curve so you can enjoy all there is to do in the area. For those interested in the outdoors, Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, located on the southern edge of Henderson, offers several miles of hiking and horseback trails as well as stunning views of the desert landscape. Sloan Canyon is home to over 300 Native American petroglyphs and is often called the Sistine Chapel of Native American rock art. The conservation area is more than 48,000 acres with volcanic peaks reaching 5,000 feet. For more hiking, Black Mountain, just to the north of Sloan Canyon in Madeira Park, features a nearly six-mile trail to the top of the mountain with a vertical climb of over 2,000 feet.

To the east, Henderson residents can enjoy the diversity of Lake Mead National Recreation Area. Lake Mead offers boating on the largest reservoir in the United States, water skiing, sport fishing, kayaking and canoeing. It’s also perfect for hiking, camping and sight-seeing with unique desert landscapes, brilliant blue water, red rocks and quiet coves. Lake Mead and its surroundings cover over 1.5 million acres with nine separate wilderness areas. Founded by Mormon settlers in 1865, St. Thomas is a historical curiosity in the Lake Mead area. Mormons came to the site because of the excellent farming, believing they were still in Utah, but soon discovered they were in Nevada and libel to pay state tax. Rather than pay the taxes, they burned their homes, abandoned crops and moved to Salt Lake City. With the building of Hoover Dam in the 1930’s the city was flooded. Only recently have the waters rescinded and visitors can see the remnants of the old town. A city tutor from Henderson will able to answer many of your questions about the history of Henderson.

For a chronicle of the history of the Henderson and Las Vegas area a visit to the Clark County Museum offers plenty of variety. The museum includes artifacts relating to the Native American Pueblo and Paiute tribes, early mining technology as well as a history of the gambling industry in Las Vegas. The museum features a timeline exhibit of southern Nevada history from pre-historic to modern times.
