About North Las Vegas
Sin City, or Las Vegas, has always been known for its gangsters, cowboys and showgirls. Vegas was always the place where you could do anything and be anyone and then go back home like nothing ever happened. But despite the rebel reputation that Vegas had, it was still an annexed city with government rules and regulations. Thomas Williams came to Las Vegas with his family from Eureka, Utah in 1919. Government rule was what Williams was trying to leave when he came to Vegas. After finding out Sin City was as wild and free as he thought it would be he decided to go just a little further north for his law free Utopia.
About one mile down the hill from Vegas Williams purchased a 160 acre lot. He was fond of the area's water accessibility and potential for active farmland. Each acre was purchased for $8.00 each. Williams kept 60 for himself and resold the remaining 100 acres for $10.00 each. His new founded utopia would later be known as North Las Vegas. Here is where they would be free of laws and regulations found in other cities including Vegas. There would be no regulations on livestock, building codes, loud cops, and even people of color. Williams began to set up paved roads and irrigation lines. Even power lines were extended throughout his city. Each lot sold included its own power and water systems. Although Williams did not like forms of government he was still devout to the Bible. To attract churches to his new found community, lots were given at no cost to any church that would settle in North Las Vegas.
The prohibition came along in 1919 and ironically it was no longer legal in Las Vegas to sell, make or consume alcoholic beverages. This erupted the bootleggers era. North Las Vegas earned the nickname “Old Town” although no one seems to know how this got picked up. Old Town became the perfect location for moonshiners to set up shop. Since the town still was not annexed as a city, there were no laws against the alcohol and no one there to stop them. Out of the 80 lots sold, 31 of them were purchased by moonshiners. Although, Williams stuck to his own farming, that was still legal throughout the country, his bootlegging neighbors would still stick by his side. Williams had an excellent crop of watermelons one year which wasn’t going to make it to market. A railroad strike occurred preventing him from bringing his watermelons to the market. His neighbors purchased the melons from him turning it into melonshine.
The community grew as the years went on. Schools were built, a post office and a telephone was available. Several schools had been built, including the grammar school named Washington School. Williams donated land to for the school and encouraged parents to get their children there. A tutor today can help you with your studies just like Williams encouraged children to do at his school.
