Originally purchased by the famous millionaire recluse Howard Hughes, the city of Summerlin, Nevada is a suburb of Las Vegas at the northwestern corner of the Las Vegas Valley. Hughes bought the land in 1952 and promptly named the property Husite, but when he died in 1976 his heirs took over the land, changed the name to Summerlin (after Hughes’s grandmother) and came up with the idea of building a master-planned community on the site. Developers began breaking ground in 1988 and the first building in Summerlin was the Meadows School, one of the valley’s best private college preparatory schools. Residential neighborhoods and parks soon followed until today, Summerlin is over 20,000 acres with a population nearing 100,000. The southward extension of the master-planned community, known as Summerlin South, adds a population of 25,000. From 1997 until 2007 Summerlin ranked number one for new home sales among master-planned communities in the United States. The goal of the hike is the 3,000-year-old Raintree, a large bristlecone pine which is the oldest living tree in southern Nevada.
