    About Summerlin

Originally purchased by the famous millionaire recluse Howard Hughes, the city of Summerlin, Nevada is a suburb of Las Vegas at the northwestern corner of the Las Vegas Valley. Hughes bought the land in 1952 and promptly named the property Husite, but when he died in 1976 his heirs took over the land, changed the name to Summerlin (after Hughes’s grandmother) and came up with the idea of building a master-planned community on the site. Developers began breaking ground in 1988 and the first building in Summerlin was the Meadows School, one of the valley’s best private college preparatory schools. Residential neighborhoods and parks soon followed until today, Summerlin is over 20,000 acres with a population nearing 100,000. The southward extension of the master-planned community, known as Summerlin South, adds a population of 25,000. From 1997 until 2007 Summerlin ranked number one for new home sales among master-planned communities in the United States. Significant features of Summerlin include the TPC Summerlin golf course, the Summerlin Library and Performing Arts Center and the JW Marriot Las Vegas Resort and Spa.

While Summerlin is primarily a residential community it is surrounded by one of the most exciting urban areas in the world. In fact, Las Vegas receives over 40 million visitors every year. A Grade Potential Tutor can keep you well ahead of the academic curve so you can get out and enjoy the many activities and attractions that Las Vegas and its surroundings can offer. Just a few miles east from Summerlin on Highway 95 is downtown Las Vegas. Unlike the sprawling Strip with its mega-themed resorts, the downtown is compacted into only a few city blocks and comes together on iconic Fremont Street (the site of many a movie car chase).

Fremont Street is home to some of the oldest hotels and casinos in Las Vegas. A main attraction of the downtown is the Fremont Street Experience, a blocks long canopy which comes alive with movies, music and animation several times every evening. The light show includes high resolution imagery and state of the art concert quality sound. One of the best things to do downtown is take a ride on SlotZilla, a 12-story, slot machine inspired zip line which flies under the lights of the Fremont Street Experience.

Not only is Summerlin situated next to the entertainment capital of the world but it is also not far from the scenic natural beauty of Mt. Charleston and the Spring Mountains. In the winter, the mountains become a white wonderland with a wealth of recreational opportunities including skiing, sledding or just building a snowman. In the summer, a trip to Mt. Charleston is mandatory to escape the 100-degree heat in the Las Vegas Valley. Summer fun includes hiking, camping, climbing, sight-seeing and bird watching. The area abounds with hiking opportunities and one of the best treks into the Spring Mountain wilderness is a journey to the Raintree, a seven-mile round-trip hike which climbs over 2,000 feet to an elevation of 10,000 feet. The goal of the hike is the 3,000-year-old Raintree, a large bristlecone pine which is the oldest living tree in southern Nevada.
