Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

Mathematics has not only been my strongest subject growing up in school, but also my favorite. I have always excelled in the subject, and have helped my peers in my classes along the way as well. That is why when I switched from an Engineering major to a Mathematics major at Cal Poly, the Teaching Concentration caught my eye. I would enjoy aiding students as a fellow student myself, so why not as a teacher? The Teaching Concentration has been great for me so far. So far at Cal Poly, I have been able to observe high school and middle school Math classes, reflect on my observations, and even tutor students during my observations as well. My goal is to obtain a Single-Subject Credential in Mathematics to teach high school or middle school math, and I truly believe that Cal Poly is giving me all the tools needed to succeed as a tutor and a teacher. Tutoring for Grade Potential would not only give me the satisfaction of helping students learn, but also a learning experience for myself as a future Math teacher. Because I work full-time during the summer, and also part-time during the school year, I know how important it is to be extremely punctual. At my other jobs, if I am not punctual, I do not seem reliant to my co-workers. But as a tutor, not only do I not seem reliant to my students if I am not punctual, but they are not able to learn from me if I am not punctual. This gives me further motivation to be completely reliable as a tutor.

I think I would be a good tutor because I love to help teach people, I find it very rewarding. I fell in love with it after teaching horseback riding lessons at a summer camp, and have actively sought education opportunities ever since. I'm currently a biology major at Cuesta and plan on transferring into Cal Poly and eventually getting my teaching credential so I can teach biology at the high school level. I'm extremely excited to be pursuing the path of becoming an educator, and would be very happy tutoring with Grade Potential.I've taught beginning saxophone lessons as well as informally tutoring friends and friends' younger siblings in their classes.

One of my qualities is being punctual. So I would be reliable in terms of keeping my appointments and fulfilling my commitments. Giving up is not one of my qualities, I will always keep trying, often using different approaches, until my goals are achieved. I can apply this to tutoring, as the students are sometimes not able to understand the material in a certain way, and showing them different ways of approaching the problem and different ways of solving it often helps the students understand.I always help my friends with their math and physics problems. I also tutored my brother with Calculus before he took the class so that he could do well in it.

I am experienced in helping a wide variety of learners to understand both Math and English Composition. I am efficient in finding different ways of explaining the same problem in order to help a student find the angle of approach that works best for them and have unlimited patience. I have earned an A.A. in Mathematics from Cuesta as well a B.A. in Liberal Studies from ULV. While at ULV, I spent extensive time studies the different ways students learn and how to teach to those learning styles. Currently, I am working as a bookkeeper and furthering my education with accounting classes. I am told I am a great teacher and I genuinely love helping people obtain a deeper knowledge of mathematics! I am passionate about people, life-long learning, and even math :-)

I would be a good tutor for Grade Potential because, as a college student, I am very focused on education and understand its importance at every level. I have high education goals for myself and would love to help younger students feel like they can reach their educational goals as well. I graduated from high school in the top 3% of my class of 275 students and took 7 AP classes. While science is where I am most comfortable, I also believe I would be a good English tutor as well because I have always done well in writing-based courses. I have had many excellent teachers in the past who have passed on memorization tricks for material and I have also taken many classes that emphasize group work to teach each other the material. I am reliable and I enjoy having a schedule for things, so keeping appointments will not be a problem. As someone who has worked with children and students of all ages younger than me in a sports setting, I really love to see the way they grow as they improve and it would be just a rewarding to see them improve their grades in order to accomplish their long term goals.

When I graduate from Cal Poly I aspire to teach High School Calculus. That being said I have found that tutoring not only prepares me for my future career, but also helps me accomplish a higher goal: to help students learn to love math. In my own experience I have met a number of students who hate math because of a bad teacher or not getting the help they needed. I want students to love math again, not only because I think it is a great subject, but also because jobs are becoming increasingly math based. The mere look on a student's face when he/she finally understands something and knowing that I had something to do with that is truly rewarding. The passion that I have to help these students, the pursuit of my goals, as well as my previous experience enable me to be able to teach these students in a way that will make them want to know more. In terms of reliability I am an extremely punctual person. I am never late to class and find it incredibly important to stick to the commitments that I have made. It is important to me with the students I have had to come on time, dressed appropriately, and being ready to work with them. Also I feel it is very important when tutoring students to not only act professionally, but to do so while being personable and approachable.

Aside from experience, I have always had the innate desire to help people understand. In school I was always the one that people looked to for help in math, and because of my love for the subject and my yearning to help I developed the communications skills necessary to reach those who struggle or think differently than myself. In addition to that my experience with a variety of people has led me to be an efficient appointment setter.
