Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I have tutored off and on since high school, when I tutored a second and fifth grader. Since then, I have offered my services at helping fellow college students refine their essay writing, with all around positive results. As the Driftwood Editor (see resume), I also ran the attached workshop class which involved teaching college students how to edit, compile, and organize a literary magazine.

I have aptitude to teaching with the focus of helping the individual to succeed. I have experienced that with just some applied focus on the challenge of that subject and with encouragement that the learner can actually make the grade he or she desires.

I work as a Social Education Instructional Aide fir the Poway Unified School District. I have 6 years experience working with Children from k - 8. I provide instruction on language arts and math skills.I develop relationships with the kids to find ways to inspire and motivate them to work hard and master new skills.

I take pride in my work with students and find value in serving as a facilitator of their learning. The ultimate goal is for students to become self-reliant as scaffolds of support are taken down as needed. I monitor student progress data on a constant basis so I'm aware of the specific areas in which a student is growing and the areas in which he/she still needs focus. This allows me to re-evaluate my plan according to the observations, informal, and formal data to tailor my instruction to each particular student. My 20-year employment history and excellent evaluations as a teacher and administrator in San Diego Unified School District show my level of reliability, integrity, and dedication to my commitment to students, parents, and my employer.

I believe that I have been a great mentor/tutor/teacher on many levels throughout life as I enjoy sharing knowledge and communicating with others. My experience as a student and those who came to aid me in times most needed taught me the values of patience, understanding, compassion, and the ability to share.When I entered college for a second time, I was determined to learn and succeed. But, I had to know if I would be a good student to make it worth my while to attend higher education. As such, I went through a series of tests and came to find out that I had a learning disability, which caused me to process slower than the Bell Curve would suggest we all process. However, I overcame all of these hurdles and recently graduated from one of the most rigorous engineering programs in the United States. I owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who tutored me. I feel compelled to help others who may be in the same conundrum I experienced as I progressed through higher education and I would love to help out.A career in teaching has not ever been my goal, but I recall the enjoyment I had as a student when I would tutor others once I was proficient at these skills. I would always be the one to form study groups and lead them until we all understood the material.So, because of my passion to learn, a proclivity to be thorough, maturity, well articulated speech, patience, and a gregarious nature, I think I could be a great tutor.

I live by the quote "Seek to understand, before you are understood". Basically i believe the learning process is an engaging situation between two people and the teacher should first seek to understand the capabilities and learning style of the student which will ultimately lead to a successful personal relationship with good communication and thus a good learning environment.

I consider that each student is different and unique in its own way. To find a fun and dinamic way of teaching for my students to learn is my main goal. I also consider that working along with the parents is key for successful students. Students spend most of their time with their teachers, but when they get home is important for their parents to know how to handle their child needs in education. For this reason, I consider that a good tutor should not only tutor the student but the parents as well.

I would be a good tutor because of many reasons. My first reason would be the passion I have for helping and teaching people. I genuinely enjoy helping people understand concepts or solve problems. I have never been employed as a tutor, but I have helped many friends and students during college. Also, I helped my cousin, who is currently in High School, with classes and concepts she struggles with. I understand the qualities and work habits expected in the office environment. I work well with others and accomplish tasks efficiently. And I value reliability greatly.
