Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I have been a professional teacher for my entire adult life. I taught piano for 20 years and now am a K-8 substitute school teacher for three different districts. I will be going back to graduate school in the near future to pursue a teaching credential. I have also written multiple books on music theory and music education so I am very adept at writing skills. As a lifelong teacher, I have the experience to readily assess a student's needs a quickly develop strategies to help them learn in an effective and efficient manner. I have also worked extensively with children who possess learning disabilities.

I believe I am a good tutor because I love the subjects that I want to tutor. I also understand how hard some of these subjects are and I try my hardest to break it down to the basics then build on that. While in class I would host study session and help my fellow classmates through the material. One of my classmates in General Chemistry I only got Ds on the tests throughout the semester. After studying with me for the final he was able to get a B on the test. I honestly care for the people I help and instead of giving the answers I like to help them find the answers. I also am a professional when it comes to my work. Since I care about the subjects and the people I help I want to make sure that I am reliable for them. I want to help them succeed and success demands consistency, which I aim to provide. Not only do I bring consistency I also bring knowledge of college. I was originally a psychology major going into the music business industry. I learned a little too late that my real passion was science and research. I believe that having someone tell me their story and/or give my advice when I was younger would have helped me find my passion sooner. As a tutor I will try not only to help them pass the class, but learn the subject and their future.

I love working with students and am very passionate about the work that I do. I have a large variety of experience from kindergarten through college age students, public to private school settings, formal to informal classroom setting, and across different states. I think I have the skills to adequately support any student I work with.I am also a very kind and patient teacher. I believe that all students can accomplish what they set their mind to and love helping students problem solve through challenges and help build up their confidence in whatever subjects they struggle with.

I am confident I would be a great tutor who students would love to work with! For the last 2 and a half years, I worked as an Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) at SD city schools. Majority of the children were elementary-aged, while a few were in middle and high school. Handwriting, sentence/paragraph form and emotional regulation was our typical focus. Often, I supported the curriculum used by the teacher, pulling out for a one on one session or a small group session or pushing into the classroom for the child that was being seen for OT. I was in constant collaboration with the teacher, resource specialist, parents, speech therapists, aides, physical therapists, etc. We worked collectively to ensure students were learning alongside their classmates, even as they were identified as having an IEP (Individualized Education Plan). Before transitioning to school work, I was an OTA for about 15 years in hospitals and long-term care facilities. There, too, was a huge element of teaching in this profession and setting.

I know I would be a good tutor based off the personal experience working in the United States Marine Corps in many different leadership roles. I also have great communication skills being able to communicate on a personal level. Having been in the military I have learned how to properly train, advise, and mentor many young men out of high school and have helped developed them into upstanding Marines and citizens

I am a good tutor because I have like and get along well with kids. I was the primary caregiver ( A Mr. Mom ). As a Mr. Mom, I constantly educated my own kids, but I also tutored my kid's friends. If anyone was having trouble with a subject they knew they could come to "Mr. Ellis" and get help. My kids are grown now ( and super brilliant ) and they haven't needed me for tutoring for years. I miss it. There is nothing like figuring out why a kid is not "getting it" then and then seeing their faces become painted with realization when I show them how to tun on the light.

Being an engineer I have a strong background in mathematics and natural sciences. In addition, I completed a minor in Political Science and I always had interest in history. Moreover, I believe that people should strive to reach highest education possible and would love to help as much as it is in my power. I have understanding for concepts/classes listed and have patience and persistence. Also throughout my studies at college and university, I encountered difficulties at times and sometimes it took an extra person, either a peer or a tutor to help me through it so I understand the importance of it.
