Find a Local Tutor Who Gets It

I understand that students have different learning styles and if a student is seeking out a tutor it is likely because she/he needs concepts explained in a way other than how his/her teacher is presenting them. One of my character strengths is being able to see things from others perspectives and figure out where it is that they are not understanding. After two years of working as a Peace Corps volunteer, I am very skilled at finding various ways to present new ideas. I worked with farmers in Paraguay and they may not understand when I started talking about soil nutrients or the importance of compost piles, but when I explained these things in terms that they are already familiar with, they were able to make the connection and grasp the new concept I was presenting to them. It often took examples (doing it first myself, then doing it together, then them doing it on their own) and I think that is a good approach to tutoring as well. I am very reliable. I have held many jobs where I always reported to work on time and whenever I was scheduled to work. In Paraguay I ran multiple committees/women's groups that I was committed to meeting with weekly and it was important that everyone show up and be on time so as not to waste each others time and so we could get everything on the agenda completed.

I think I would be a good tutor for Grade Potential because I am a responsible, reliable worker who always fulfills any commitments I make. When working as a tutor for three years I only missed one tutoring session once while I had the flu. As a tutor I love seeing that moment where the student finally understands what you are teaching and begins to be able to to do the work on their own. I am very patient and like to make my tutoring as fun as possible, especially for younger students who sometimes find it difficult to understand why they need tutoring help or are embarrassed about being behind their peers.I have three years of experience working as both a paid and volunteer tutor. I volunteered as a tutor working with students kindergarten through senior year of highschool. During this time I focused on helping younger students learn to read and do simple math and helped highschool students mainly with language, composition, and some chemistry.

I have experience working with children from 4-adult, I'm down with mnemonic devices and other silly things that help people learn, I make learning fun and interesting, and I help students find the correct answer instead of telling them what it is. I'm never late (ask my clients for my other job - freelance harpist!), I always answer my phone and email, and my passion is in teaching!I've been working as an instructor at tutor for Revolution Prep since October 2012. I teach ACT and SAT test preparation.

I have worked as an instructional assistant in an autism day class, instructing the children in all academic areas. I have also spent over 3 years conducting psycho-educational assessments for both children and adults. I am skilled at identifying specific deficiencies as well as encouraging clients to continue even when a task is frustrating or difficult.

August 2011-December 2011 • Taught part time with 29, 2nd graders by teaching all areas of academia, including English Learners and Special Needs. • Created small group and one-on-one lessons for struggling, GATE, and English Learner students. • Lead and assisted lessons for entire grade level activities and school events. I love working with people, especially children. I've raised 2 kids who are now life long learners, and have 8 years of experience in teaching. I'm very dependable, easy going, and have a flexible schedule. I know the area well, and have a totally clean record.As a Substitute teacher, I tutor all day, and do a lot of counseling too.

I believe I would be a great tutor because I am passionate about learning as well as teaching. I make it my goal to continue my education and to be a life long learner. It is a joy of mine to see a student discover something or have that moment where things click. I believe in order to make that possible, you have to be flexible and creative to reach students. Everyone learns differently and as a good teacher and tutor, it is important to think outside the box and look for ways you can connect with that student and make the material come alive for them. I have been a substitute teacher for about 5 years now and am extremely reliable. I also have private clients and am diligent in being prompt for our appointments.I was a writing tutor at Crafton Hills College in Yucaipa, Ca. Here I assisted students organize, draft, write and proofread essays and papers at the collegiate level. I have also tutored students at the elementary and middle school level on various subjects. This was not through a specific employer, just through word of mouth and personal relationships with students and their parents.

Throughout my previous job experience I acquired a skill set perfect for tutoring. As a musician, it was necessary for me to learn how to both relate and talk to people. As a dance instructor, I learned how to break concepts down to make them easily understandable both as individual components and as a whole. As a childcare provider, I became used to working with children and showing them the value of knowledge. In high school I received a scores of 4(above average) and 5(exceeds expectation) in my Advanced Placement State Exams in English Literature and Composition and Spanish respectively.
