    About Lorain

Lorain is a city in northeastern Ohio, that sits right on the shores of Lake Erie. Lorain is home to a very diverse population; it is home to people from over seventy different nationalities, and has even been given the nickname, “The International City.” With so much cultural diversity, Lorain residents could tutor others in how to respect the heritages of people from around the world.

One way that Lorain residents celebrate their multicultural heritage is through the Lorain International Festival. The annual festival happens each summer, and offers fun for visitors of all ages. The festival includes multiple international musical ensembles and dance troupes, the Lorain International Princess Pageant, and even the Lorain International Breakfast. Festival attendees will get to experience the sounds and styles of cultures from around the world; including musicians like African Royalty, Alma de Mexico, Phillipene American Association of Greater Lorain County, Esencia Boricua Cultural de Lorain, the No Strangers Here Irish Band, and Scottish Highlanders. There are also performances from dance troupes like the Veseli Plesaci Croatian Dancers, Raks Shadan Dance Troupe, Pure Country Dancers, ShoJoJi Japanese Dances, Lorain Hungarian Folk Dancers, and the Chamberlain Irish Dancers. The festival is a great place to experience musical entertainment from around the world.

Another one of Lorain’s fun family attractions is the Lorain Palace Theatre. The theatre opened in 1928, and has been attracting families and entertainment enthusiasts for generations. The theatre was originally built to help rebuild Lorain’s downtown area, after a tornado almost destroyed the city. It was one of the first buildings to be built after the storm, and helped propel the devastated downtown area forward. At the time, the Lorain Palace Theatre was the biggest single story theatre in Ohio.

On opening night, the theatre put on a full and thrilling show. It made history, showing Ohio’s first ever talking movie, a “film resume of world events.” The audiences were dazzled by a comedy and novelty reel, and a invigorating performance by Syd Sampliner and his Palace Concert Orchestra; followed by three vaudeville acts. Then to the shock of the audience, the Wurlitzer Organ rose out from below the stage, while the organist impressed the audience with dramatic pulsating crescendos. The evening ended with the pre-release of, “Something Always Happens,” starring Neil Hamilton and Esther Ralston. Over the years the theatre has undergone some renovation, but the heart of the family entertainment venue remains the same. It even still has the original crystal chandelier, two loges (loges are the lowest balconies in a theatre), and the Wurlitzer pipe organ, to help visitors feel as though time has stood still. The Lorain Palace Theatre hopes to continue to serve the community for several more generations to come.

Lorain tutors want all students to do well in school. If your child is struggling in school, a Lorain tutor might be just what you need. Every student deserves the chance to succeed.
