    About Hempfield

East of the Monongahela River and about 40 minutes from downtown Pittsburgh, Hempfield Township, Pennsylvania is the largest suburb of the metropolitan area. The area which is now Hempfield Township in Westmoreland County, not to be confused with East Hempfield Township in Lancaster County, was purchased by the family of William Penn in 1768 and opened to settlers the next year. Many of the first to come were German Lutherans migrating west from New York, Maryland and eastern Pennsylvania. Since some of them came from Hempfield Township in the east they decided to name their new town Hempfield as well. The name, of course, comes from the no-nonsense relative of marijuana which was grown in Pennsylvania for nearly two centuries when it was caught up in a law banning the illicit weed in 1933. Industrial hemp reportedly has more than 25,000 uses. Hempseed oil is high in essential fatty acids such as Omega 6 and can be used to improve heart health, aging skin and boost immunity. The outer fiber of hemp makes excellent rope, building material, clothes and can be used to replace carbon fiber which today is used for cars, bicycles and anything else that requires lightweight material. Today, hemp is beginning to make a comeback in Pennsylvania with experts estimating it could be the state’s largest cash crop because of its versatility. As with many parts of western Pennsylvania, coal mining played a role in the history of Hempfield Township with the Arona Mine established in 1890 on the banks of Little Sewickly Creek. Today, Hempfield Township is a bustling suburb which serves as a retail hub for Westmoreland County.

A Hempfield Township tutor will keep you caught up on your studies so you can take time away from the books to experience the interesting things to do in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Hempfield Park in Greensburg (Westmoreland County seat surrounded by Hempfield Township) features a walking track, sports fields, pavilions, playgrounds and picnic areas. The park is also home to the Hempfield Township Athletic Complex, a perfect venue for public and private events as well as an all-purpose fitness center. Other parks in the area include Swede Hill Park, complete with soccer field and horseshoe pits and Twin Lakes Park with an upper and lower lake for fishing and paddle boating.

The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, also in Greensburg, is devoted to American art and particularly the art of southwestern Pennsylvania. Opened in 1959 the museum hosts masterpieces from America’s greatest artists including Mary Cassatt, John Singleton Copley and John Singer Sargent. Besides its permanent collections, the museum offers rotating exhibitions. Recent exhibits have highlighted fashion in art, art of movement and folk art in America. A recent expansion of the museum has concentrated on interactive displays where visitors of all ages can experience art as a hands-on experience.

For shoppers, Hempfield Township has two main destinations, the Westmoreland Mall and Greengate Center. The mall offers popular and trendy stores like Bath and Body Works, JC Penney, Champs and American Eagle Outfitters. For a bite to eat, the mall has over 20 eateries. Greengate Center is the premier big box center in the area with retailers such as WalMart, Petco and GameStop.
