About Baldwin
Just south of the Monongahela River, Baldwin, Pennsylvania is a borough in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Baldwin is named after Supreme Court Justice Henry Baldwin. Graduating with honors from prestigious Litchfield Law School in Connecticut at the turn of 19th century, Baldwin went on to be a congressman serving Pittsburgh before ascending to the high court. Legend has it that Baldwin fought a duel, a popular way to settle political differences at the time (think Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton), against another lawyer. During the first round of pistol fire, Baldwin appeared to be hit in the chest and began spitting up blood. Fortunately, the bullet had been deflected by a silver dollar in his chest pocket. In the first decades of the century he allied himself with Andrew Jackson, defending Jackson’s invasion of Florida during the First Seminole War in 1818 and heavily campaigning for Jackson’s 1828 presidential bid. For his loyalty, Jackson appointed Baldwin to the Supreme Court the next year. While labeled inconsistent for his various decisions on the high court, historians agree that Baldwin was a strict constructionist of the Constitution in the same vein as the late Antonin Scalia. In fact, Baldwin would probably fit right in with conservative jurists today who favor a literal interpretation of the founding fathers’ words. In the 1840’s Baldwin and his wife Sarah built their dream home in Meadville, north of Pittsburgh. Nicknamed “Mount Vernon in Meadville” the house was not even complete when Baldwin died in Philadelphia in 1844. The house, called the Baldwin-Reynolds House, is a now a museum open to the public. Today, Baldwin is a residential neighborhood which gets above average ratings from the real estate website Niche.
It’s certain that a Baldwin tutor will be able to get you caught up on your most difficult academic subjects so you can take some time away from the books to enjoy the attractions and amenities in the greater Pittsburgh region. For those who like to get outdoors, Baldwin has several recreation options. Elm Leaf Park, not far from the Monongahela, offers an Olympic-size swimming pool, baseball fields, basketball courts and playgrounds. Baldwin also maintains a sliver of land along the river featuring a couple of miles of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail, a multi-use trail which spans 24 miles along the Monongahela. The trail serves as the Pittsburgh hub for other local trails including the Great Allegheny Passage and the Erie to Pittsburgh Trail.
Residents and visitors alike won’t want to miss a ride on the Duquesne Incline, a trolley which transports passengers up Mt. Washington on the south side of the confluence of the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela rivers. Riders will be rewarded with a stunning view of the rivers and downtown Pittsburgh below. At night, the skyline comes alive, especially on the north side where both Heinz Field and PNC Park are often illuminated. Named after the French fort which once stood at Point State Park, Duquesne Incline is open Monday through Saturday.
For something a little different, downtown Pittsburgh is home to the Andy Warhol Museum. With the largest collection of the iconic artist’s work anywhere, the museum features paintings, drawings, photography, sculptures and wallpapers. Opened in May, 1994, the museum drew 25,000 visitors during its first weekend. It is one of four museums making up the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh along with the Museum of Art, Museum of Natural History and the Carnegie Science Center.
