    About Monroeville

About fifteen miles east from the downtown along Interstate 376, Monroeville, Pennsylvania is a suburb of Pittsburgh. Prior to the early 1800’s the area which would become Monroeville was sparsely occupied with a few scattered farms. While Pittsburgh grew into a bustling pioneer town by the late 1700’s, the woods to the east remained virtually untouched. This all changed in 1807 with the building of the Great Northern Turnpike from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. Turnpikes were originally toll roads with pikes placed in the way of travelers until a toll was collected. The new roadway came right through Monroeville on its way west to Pittsburgh and, by 1810, the town had two blacksmiths, two general merchandise stores and a hotel. In the 1840’s a local farmer named Joel Monroe began selling his land along the turnpike to new settlers, further spurring growth. Monroe eventually became the town’s first postmaster, serving from 1851-1855. As with many small towns throughout America, Monroeville adopted the name of its postmaster. More expansion came to Monroeville at the turn of the 20th century when coal from the Pittsburgh seam was discovered under the ground. This coal boom lasted about 30 years but by the 1920’s the coal had been mined and Monroeville reverted back to its origins as a small farming community. Once again, however, roads paved the way for growth in Monroeville with the building of the William Penn Highway in the 1940’s and later the Pennsylvania Turnpike which roared through the area in the 1950’s. In 1954, local businessmen built the largest shopping center between New York and Chicago. Dubbed the Miracle Mile, the center led the way for Monroeville to become a major retail destination in western Pennsylvania. Today, Monroeville is a mixture of residential and commercial developments.

A Monroeville tutor will keep you caught up on your studies so you can take time away from the books to experience the interesting things to do in Monroeville and the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. Monroeville has several public parks which provide recreational opportunities to residents. Alpine Park, Evergreen Park, Hawkeye Park and five more offer the usual amenities including athletic fields, basketball courts, gazebos, hiking trails and playgrounds.

Monroeville is home to entertainment destinations such as Steel City Indoor Karting and Zombieburgh Lazer Tag. Pennsylvania’s best all-electric indoor go-kart track is located within the Monroeville Mall. The track’s grand prix style course uses state of the art European electric carts with adjustable seats, steering wheel and pedals to make sure each driver has every advantage. Zombieburgh takes players to a post-apocalyptic world with the drooling undead around every corner. The arena offers high-tech music, strobe lighting and a challenging maze for the ultimate combat experience.

It’s just a short drive from Monroeville to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh’s Schenley Park. Founded in the late 1800’s by steel magnate Henry Phipps, the conservatory and gardens feature indoor and outdoor plant habitats. Indoor gardens include Palm Court, the Serpentine Room and the Orchid Room. Outdoor gardens are highlighted by the Rooftop Edible Garden and the Japanese Courtyard Garden. The conservatory’s website boasts that it is one of the greenest facilities in the world (no pun intended) and is designed to be as environmentally sustainable as possible.
