Just a few miles southwest from Atlanta on Interstate 85, Union City is known for its quiet neighborhoods and developing business district. The city, originally established by Drewry Arthur Carmichael and Charles Simon Barrett, gained its charter in 1908. At the time, Barrett had recently been elected president of the National Farmers Union, hence the name Union City. Carmichael became the first mayor and was also the chairman of the school board. For more local history, a trip to Green Manor Restaurant is mandatory. When Carmichael married Cora Westbrook the bride’s family gave the couple 30 acres of farmland and a house built in the early 1800’s. Carmichael quickly became quite prosperous and built a large new southern plantation style house with white columns and marble steps. The house included 10 fireplaces, beveled windows and doors, pine floors and a wrap-around porch. It was converted to a restaurant in 1990.
As with many old houses, the Carmichael/Westbrook mansion has its legends. One story suggests that the house is haunted by Cora’s spinster sister Florence, who lived in a second-story room of the house until she was killed when her dress accidentally caught on fire while walking through the plantation’s cotton fields. The restaurant’s manager reports that objects are often moved around inexplicably and that water is heard running in the basement but when investigated nothing is found. In 1996 a local police officer reported to the restaurant because of a burglar alarm. As he looked around the back of the house he looked up and saw a woman in the second-floor window. When he attempted to report it, his radio would not work. Green Manor is now listed in the registry of State and National Historic Places.
Every October, Union City hosts the one-day UC Music and Arts Festival, an outdoor event featuring a vast selection of food, live music and entertainment. The zoo features animals from across the globe including African elephants, lions, giant tortoises, orangutans, zebras and rhinoceros. The most popular exhibit, however, are the giant pandas. One of only four zoos in the U.S. to house pandas these cuddly creatures may be seen year-round at virtually any time of day. They feed almost exclusively on bamboo unlike their bear relatives who are omnivorous.
