From Fast Food to College: Mayra’s Story

David used to picture his future after high school as a fast food job. Not because he couldn’t do more. As his mom Mayra explains, David had simply decided that’s just what kids do after high school.

Mayra saw it differently. “Sometimes we can aim higher,” she told him. “Working in fast food is good, but we can always aim higher.”

Today, David pictures himself in college. Here’s what changed.

Watching the Signs of Progress

Like most parents, Mayra kept a close eye on David’s grades through ParentVue, the portal that gives families a direct window into their child’s classroom. That’s where she started noticing something different.

“I really saw improvement when I started checking David’s grades on ParentVue,” she says. “I saw the constant notes that the teachers were adding, especially for math and reading.”

The notes weren’t just about scores. They were proof that David was showing up differently in the classroom.

The Real Change Wasn’t Just the Grades

What Mayra noticed next mattered even more than the notes themselves.

“He was really trying, and that tutoring was working,” she says. “His self-esteem, his confidence in those subjects, was increasing.”

For a student who had already written off college as something other kids got to do, that shift in confidence was the real turning point. Math and reading stopped being subjects David dreaded, and started being subjects he believed he could handle.

A Sense of Relief for Parents, Too

The change wasn’t only David’s to feel. For Mayra and her partner Nick, watching him learn and grow brought something they hadn’t expected: relief.

“For us as parents, watching David learn and be tutored, my partner and I have this sense of relief knowing that there is someone that is helping our child thrive where we struggle to help him,” Mayra says. “The experience has brought us a sense of relief. It has provided us a support system that we know we have access to.”

That’s a feeling a lot of parents will recognize: wanting to help, but knowing a subject or a moment calls for more than you can give alone.

Finding the Right Fit

For Mayra, it comes down to one thing.

“I think that’s the beauty of Grade Potential, that Grade Potential cares about finding the right fit,” she says.
