Superior Township, is a small community in southern Michigan. Within Superior, is Dixboro, a historic area that lies right in the middle of a road that goes from Detroit to Ann Arbor. In over 175 years, Dixboro has literally watched history unfold along this road; from horse drawn wagons to motor vehicles, Civil Wars to World Wars, times of plenty to Great Depressions, Dixboro has seen it all.
Unfortunately, as times change, town’s change; old is traded in for new, and things of the past become distant memories. But in Dixboro, though the time has changed and the new has come, one thing remains the same. Visitors for generations have traveled through Dixboro and through time. You could have been an abolitionist of the 1850’s, a industrialist of the 1890’s, a Suffragette in the 1910s, a soldier in WWII, a love child of the 60s, a tech savvy programer of the information age, or a millenial of the 2010’s, but you would walk into the same General Store on Plymouth Road.
Built around 1840, the Dixboro General Store supplied all the basic needs, and depended largely on trade from locals and travels. Fortunately, the store, sat right on the main route, where people traveling back and forth between Ann Arbor and Detroit would be likely to stop. As things in the area began to pick up, the store became the local post office and even provided haircuts.
By the 1920’s the top floor was renovated into a town dance hall; and that hardwood floor is the same one visitors walk on today. Eventually, Plymouth Road was paved and cars became the most common way to get around. Seeing another opportunity, a gas pump was added to the store. Throughout the stores 177 years of existence, it only closed down once. The hard economic times of WWII were too much to keep the store open. Even so, the doors reopened in 1947. In fact, the reopening included a hot dog stand to attract the increasing amount of travelers still coming down Plymouth Road.
As general stores started losing out to big box stores, the Dixboro General Store was quick to adapt. Appropriately, the store switched to selling antiques and did so until the 1980’s. In 1990, new owners came in and restored the whole building. They redid the landscape and restored the other buildings on the property as well. They also switched from antiques, to a home decorating store. Today’s owners continue to sell furniture and home decor and appreciate getting to be yet another chapter in the store’s incredible history.
One thing for sure is that the Dixboro General Store could tutor us all in longevity, and resilience. Superior tutors want to help every student persevere through even the most challenging subjects. Able to help students of all ages and in many different subjects, Superior tutors want to help every student reach success and surpass expectations.
